Beagle killed by Coyote?

I have had numerous complaints over the last 6 years of coyotes attacking dogs, some fatal some just a vocal stand off. If you like your dog and coyotes are present I would not let them roam at anytime of the day. An attack will more than likely happen.

After reading the previous posts I think you can understand where the concept of a decoy dog came from!

No dogs, big or small are immuned to being killed, talk to a greyhound guy he will tell you stories of some of the toughest coyotes that a big kill dog couldn't take one on one.

GC, glad to hear about Bullet's recovery, how does he react when he sees or hears coyotes now?

Well i just received a complaint about 5 coyotes and a border collie fighting 20 yards from the house on one of my producers. Doesn't like this combined with the fact he's calving close by also. So we will plug in another border collie, one of my decoy dogs, a rifle, a call and see how it plays out tomorrow, weather permitting.

coyote roede,
Ole' Bullet the Beagle despises coyotes. When he hears them howl out back he perks his ears up and gives a low rumble type growl. When I bring one home, every hair on his back ruffs up and he'll stiff leg over and give it a sniff or two - as long as I'm there. If I'm not there, say I drop one in the back yard and turn him out, he's a whole bunch more cautious!

As Randy state's above.

A fresh coyote will be all over a dog[I believe, any dog], in a one on one fight. A tough dog with alot of stamina & heart, may eventually get the best of a lone coyote by getting a [throat hold]..."may". But, will surey pay for it's efforts.

I've seen quite afew dog[sighthound] & coyote fights. These have been after the coyote has been caught after a chase, some a short chase, some after a long chase. They are a blur in a fight, especially when they are fresh & not wore down.

One noted dog fight many yrs ago. Jack, a 85lb male kick butt Greyhound. Caught a 47lb female coyote alone out in a mile section. Jack caught her after she had already ran 1/2 mile. They fought one on one face to face, as witnessed by my friend Larry.

Shortly, into this fight. The coyote was kicking his butt. Soon Jack broke off the fight, as he had, had enough. But the coyote wanted more of this dog & "ran him down", two more times to fight him some more.

Coyote broke off & ran another 1/2 mile. One more large[fresh] tough Greyhound was dumped on this female coyote. They fought hard, one on one. Coyote, kicked that dog's butt as well.

Our trailhound Pokey, eventually bayed her another 1/2 mile into a section. I killed her with my shotgun.

Coyotes are mean critters, My grandpa lost a little rat terrier to a pair of coyotes a few years back. He was mushroom hunting in the spring had the dog along, it got over the hill from him and he heard all hell break loose. By the time he got there (he said about 30-45 seconds). It was to late. Bite marks around the neck and in the rump area like they played tug of war with it. Coyotes bolted when they saw him.

In the mid to late 90s I lived in Gwinnett County, Georgia, just east of Stone Mountain and Atlanta. Coyotes were moving in and establishing themselves and they were the BIG variety. Many, many stories were in the local papers about the yotes taking all kinds of backyard dogs, pet goats, and cats. They showed up in Talliferro county still further east and we took a few in deer season. Again, big ones. Chupacabras were initially suspected in Gwinnett but as a couple of Coyote fido chompers were killed in poeples' backyards, that was quickly disproved. Harry

Here in arizona we have coyotes moving into what they call the Biltmore. Its one of those high end resorts in the middle of town. It was bad enough that it made the news. But I think that they would frown /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif on anyone but game and fish tring to take them. You can go to almost any golf course here and find dogs. But again your can't hunt them. I can walk into a McDonalds in full camo and older folks will ask what I'm hunting and I tell them coyotes, and they say kill them all, one of them ate my dog or cat.
