beagles and predator calling

New to board and my first post. After coon hunting for 13 years and bird hunting for 15 I finally got tired of chasing big dogs onto someone elses property and losing dogs. Then came the little hounds. Easier to catch and rabbits run circles. The beagles run anything. Turned lose they will 9 out of 10 times start a rabbit, but when combined with a predator call, will run a grey fox like crazy. What a hoot to turn out on a hot fox track. I have turned them out on fox and bobcat and they run both with ease. Don't turn out on coyotes because they will kill the little hounds. Coyotes are not cowards when it comes to dogs. Fox is a faster race than a rabbit. I don't think rabbits give off as much scent as do a fox. Don't use a gun very often on rabbit or fox but enjoy calling and the chase. Didn't realize how many other hunters looked down on hound hunters until the internet let them speak thier mind without being seen.

Welcome to P.M. Sounds like you know how to have fun. It's impossible to have beagles and not smile a lot. Great little dogs.

CHAN holy hell Round Rock!!!! I went to HS there in the early 90's. I used to live off of gatis school road. Wow. To adress your post well I think alot of guys slag hound hunters because they don't have any. And it does have a high start up price if you want to run more than one. I have a beagle and I am trying to break him from chasing quial. I am thinking that he wants just a chase more than anything. As to why people don't like hound hunters I don't know maybe it is very reminicent of arisocratic noblity fox hunting and most americans have an aversion to that. Who the hell KNows.
Chan drop me an e-mail
jimlost@hotmail.com I would like to know whats happening in the rock lately.

Cheers Jim

Jim, I do most of my rabbit training at Old Settlers Park. Have had coyotes run my dogs back to me that close to town. That side of town has really grown but there are still coyotes on that little creek bottom. I want to slip down ther early some morning with my caller and bow and try to get one.

hello chan iv got a beagle pup i'v never hunted with dogs .will she run back to me if a yote tries to get her?do you make them sit with you when you are calling and wait to see what comes in?and then set the dog after it please give me some in-depth info

mjr,
Congrats on the pup /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif !! Good luck !!

Try and hook up with other beagle guys, it'll just be easier to train with experienced dogs.

They sure are real cute when they're pups aint they?

And just remember to have lots of patiences, they'll respond alot better to that than losing your cool. A properly used e-collar helps alot also.

mjr, I tought one year in Aztec during 1971-72. Great country for a varmit hunter. With the beagles, I usually call from my vehicle. Doesn't seem to bother grey fox at all. Can't have a mouthy dog with you though. I usually put my e-caller speaker on top of the vehicle. My male beagle is a little mouthy in the vehicle, but a training collar takes care of that. I don't mind my beagles running anything but deer. That's what I use the training collar for. If you can get that pup going on rabbits, I bet it will run the rest ok. The reason I like calling is that I know exactly what their running. Take that pup down on the San Juan or Animas River at night and you should be able to find a rabbit. If you can see one cross the road in front of you it's even better. Have patience, some start as early as 5 months some over a year old. Never had a pup that wouldn't run. Old dogs that have never been hunted are a different story.

thanks chan, she is 8 weeks old and i have taken her out often,so she is getting brocken in right away...you right about this area lots of country to hunt.i've been told that yotes can hear her runnin a rabbitt and come after her,so that is my ,,concern for that i might get another beagle
