Is there any specific thread that custom work, specifically bedding, is posted on pm? Had a couple questions a few days ago i was looking to post but got them answered when a buddy called me back. Just bedded my 93r17 btvss!

Thanks!

Thanks guys. I did do a ton of homework before seriously considering doing it. In the future i will just post up in firearms section. My hmr shot decent groups but flyers always showed up. Wanted to mitigate that as much as poss.

I installed pillars with no problems. The trigger assembly is what had me worried about action bedding though. I couldnt just remove it, like a howa trigger, because the boss that the rear action screw uses would lose proper spacing. I ended up taping the crap out of it, tight to the action as i could, then sealing it with modeling clay. Worked very well actually. I just stressed out for about 6 hours while it set up!

Heres prepped action and post bedding (before cleaning and trimming obviously!)

Thanks man. This is only my 2nd bedding job ever, 1st being my howa mini 6arc. Nothing like that tell tail crack when it breaks loose! I just mounted my scope last night and were out if town for the holiday. Ill report back when i get it out. Someday anyways. Ive got 4 other rifles i need to get zeroed also. Next range day will be busy!

OK,OK, I'll be serious. Your bedding and pillars look pretty good for your first time, seriously! But man you used entirely to much tape. Trust your release agent and ditch some of that tape. Johnson's paste wax works good and I like Hornady One Shot in the spray can. Its easy to apply and easy to clean up. Tons of video's on Youtube and other firearm forums. Google is your friend.

I once bought a rifle that was glued in, fully bedded barrel and all. Over a few weeks I put a few drops of Kroil along the metal bedding seam and wa eventually able to break it loose with no damage to the bedding. It still shoot amazing and I could now take it down..

Ya, i wasnt shy at all with it. I realize its not a necessity, but i found epoxy in quite a few spots on my howa that i didnt want it. Especially on the stock. Got it on my finger and just didnt notice it. It was found while cleaning before it set up, but figured tape is cheap. Long as it gets everywhere i want it to be and does its job, im happy!

PS: closest thing to johnsons paste wax ive been able to find is minwax. Dont know if it would work the same or not, but Ive been using kiwi and its been good to me so far tho.

Cooking PAM works, Johnson's discontinued their paste wax don't throw away your old can. It works well on the outside of shotguns used in the salt marshes. When I was in Taiwan we could get paste wax with insecticide in it. The housekeeper would do the floors and the next morning have to sweep up the dead bugs. It would have some of great here in the SW.

I generally tape the stock from the rear of the action then past the recoil lug at least 2-3 inchs past. I always drill a few holes in the areas where the bedding is going to sort of "lock" it in. Everything gets a coat of One Shot and I let it dry ( dries fast) then usually another coat. When I say everything, I mean the areas up to at least where the bedding will be. Action screws get coated and usually one layer of electrical tape on the front side and bottom of the recoil lug. (Front meaning the side towards the crown.) I use Q-tips to clean up the over flow.

Something I forgot to mention is I use MarineTex. It stays where you put it.

I use to use Pam but its messy IMO. One Shot spray works great and its not messy at all and works very well. Kiwi works good to.

Well, a month later and i finally got out yesterday to shoot. Windy and gusty, but i figured at 50 yards it would at least tell me if theres any major issues. Which i did come across one. But…

At 50 i was able to shoot 4 rounds touching in a 4 shot group and all groups were roughly 3/8”! My 12 yo shot a ~3/4” 5 shot group. Pretty good for him. Both off bipod, no bag from prone in gusty winds. Pretty happy with the consistency, even for 50. Got a pic but wont upload for some reason?

Problem i had is there was not enough windage to adjust left enough to zero. When i mounted and bore sighted, i had the same issue trying to line up with the laser. My boresight is magnetic (muzzle mounted) which i know isnt best but has always had me on paper at 50 at least. Previous scope on this rifle zeroed just fine, and same with the rifle the new scope came off of. Only change i caught was the rings were mounted opposite as they are now. Im going to switch those back, but anyone know anything else that could cause this? Bases and all screws were checked before mounting also.

Thanks for any help guys!

Sounds like you did a good job congrats.
