Bench,bags and rests?

Scalloper,

alot of good equipment isn't really needed to produce good groups, as stated above, more has to do with practice and trigger time, also take into consideration your goals, if you are looking to produce .5moa from the bench just because... get yourself some bags, lots of great choices from the above posts as well!!! If you want to practice in conjunction with your hunting applications, may I suggest a tripod and about anything for a rear bag, I personally like to shoot my groups in the same position with the same equipment as I use in the field!!!

That’s mostly why I shoot just to practice for hunting. But I think I do need a better rest then I have now. I have never used a rear bag that should help my shooting allot. Right now I hunt coyotes with a RR PP 20" bbl. And my deer, bear and moose rifle is a TC Venture 7mm Mag not really BR rifles but what I consider very accurate hunting rifles. When some of you mention a tripod are you referring to something like this?

The lead sled is a joke. It was made for people who can't handle the recoil of their rifle but works well enough to sight in a rifle and get it on paper.

Here is a short article on some of the things that make up shooting good groups. As you can see, it's much more than just a good rest. Much of it depends on what you define as "good group".

As a minimum, this rest might work OK

Here is what I use with my pistols. When Im not shooting off of bags. I put soft shot bbs in the bags.

I'm not a fan of most Caldwell products with the exception of the Rock BR rest. Their bags are cheaply made and don't have the proper surface to allow your rifle to recoil the same each time. Protektor brand bags are what I use but you'll find any opinion you could want on bag selection.

Many BR shooters have switched to Cordura bags and spray them with silicon. Leather bags are usually sprinkled with baby powder. This allows the rifle to recoil the same each time.

If the bech wobles, dont use it. Shoot prone, get a mat, caldwell rock br and a good rear bag, probably protektor. Line up the front rest and rear bag in a straight line. Breathing is very important. I like to get to a point where I am very comfortable with very shallow breathing and when the conditions are right exhale squeeze. The absolute best thing as previously mentioned is trigger time. I was an awful shot 5 years ago, I am getting better the only thing that made me better is trigger time. I hope this helps.

I had the dead-shot set. I didn't really like em. I gave em away in the PIF.

I currently use a caldwell rock Jr and home-made bags. It works rather well for me! But then again, I'm not shooting comps for money.
