Hi Everyone, I have been struggling for roughly 2 years to create an accurate batch of bullets for my Benelli MR1 in the 223 caliber with a 1-9 twist rate. I use this rifle as a coyote gun. I would appreciate any help with a recipe that you have had luck with.

Here is what I have tried so far:

Powders: Varget, Benchmark, superperformance
Primers: CCI , Winchester
Brass: Remington, Winchester
Bullets: 53 grain V-Max, 55 Grain V-Max, 60 Grain V-Max, 55grain Nosler Varmint BT

With all of these different combinations I have not been able to generate any 1MOA groupings at 100yards. Not even close to 1MOA. I could sure use some help and advice from any other Benelli MR1 owners.

Thanks

Hi GL Shooter, Thanks for responding to my post.

When I had purchase the gun. I went out and bought Winchester 55gr, Remington 55gr and Hornady Superformance 53gr v-Max. All had random bullet pattern results.

I figured it was because they were factory loads and well lets be honest nothing is better than building your own bullets. I figured at least my bullets will be more consistent and accurate than these factory loads. But for some weird reason so far that is not the case with this rifle.

So after building all of these bullet combination I mentioned in the previous post. I've kind of went back to the basics and bought a whole bunch of different premade ammo to see what projectile it likes. I purchased:

Nosler Varmigeddon 55gr BT
Nosler Varmigeddon 55gr Hollow point
Nosler Varmigeddon 60gr BT
Nosler partition 75gr
Nosler partition 62gr

I guess Ill try these out and see what works. Hopefully there is something promising at least a starting point.

Have you done any reloading for this rifle?

Have you tried any light weight bullets in this rifle? You might give the 45 grain Winchester HP's (40 count, white box) a try. They usually shoot pretty good. Your rifle may just not like the heavy pills.

Never even held one of those MR1's. Just not in my style but they sure look nice. Some guys have great luck with the Varmageddons. Personally I have not and prefer the ballistic tips.

I'll be interested and see how the factory menagerie works out.

You might also look at RL 10 and 8208.

I would like to ask what kind of groups are you getting with factory ammo? What are your expectations with hand loads?

I read one review that the best groups were 2" at 100 yards with factory ammo with a scope, not the best trigger, and the scope had to be mounted very high and you had very little cheek weld shooting with a scope.

What are your thoughts about what I read in the reviews?

If your groups are larger than 2" with a scope, could it be a scope/mounting defect, just difficulty shooting the gun due to ergonomics or even a manufacture defect.

Hi AWS,

Oh factory loads hand loads I am getting big grouping. So large I didn't even want to bother measuring lol. For example, first shot would be just off center. second shot roughly 5 inches top left. Then let it rest. Third shot 10 inches from the second shot on the right side of the page. Last shot right next to the first shot. It has been like this for almost every load. Very sole crushing man lol.

I have a nice burris scope on it. I removed the rear site (just a screw or two) in order to properly mount the scope on it. My gun is the model that also has the telescopic butt. So I am able to get solid check weld on my gun. It is very comfortable to shoot. I am also shooting on a led sled so there is very little if not any human error.

From what I had read guys were getting .5 MOA, 1MOA AND 1.2MOA with this gun. I tried to reach out to them, but they never did reply.

Can you provide a photo of the rifle in the lead sled, from the factory spec page I'm not sure my lead sled would work with that rifle.

It sounds very much like you have more problems than finding the correct load. If it is shooting like that with factory loads I would be talking to Benelli before pouring more money into ammo.

I just read your post describing your rifles groups. When there is 10 inchs from one shot to the next, it sounds more like a gun problem than an ammo problem to me. Is everything tight, scope base, rings ect? How does it shoot without the scope? Something sounds wrong. Even with bad reloads it shouldn't be 10 inchs between shots. Maybe a bad crown. I've never seen one of these rifles let alone shot one so all I can do is guess at the problem. It might be a good time to give Benelli a call.

Why RL 10??? RL15 is the choice for .223. Have you checked to see if the barrel is tight. Just saying. Never seen one of those rifles. If it looks like a regular M4 check the barrel nut.

I don't think he's shot RL10. I have and done fine with the light bullets but RL15 is also a good performer for me .
