Ok you guys Im screwed if I dont get this gun apart. Its my uncles gun but I've been using it to kill turkeys/coyotes with.I got it out of the gun case I had it in today and noticed a bunch of rust under the barrel.Im not sure how it got there because I've cleaned it a bunch but holy crap there is alot of it under there.I need to get it apart and clean it.How do I do that and what in the world do I put on it to remove rust.Im nervous as a pet coon right now please help my stupid....me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Nevermind.I'll just take it over to my uncles house tomorrow and have him do it.The cap that you have to unscrew is rusted on I think.Either that or my uncle just tightened it really good, hes a big guy so its possible.Thats kind of why I wanted to try to do it myself. He doesnt get mad to easily so I think I'll be alright.Unless the cap is rusted on and then I might have the Benelli Nova wrapped around my neck. But probably not.

I finally got the barrel off of the gun.Now my only question is how do I remove the rust. There isnt as much as I once thought there was.It just seemed like there was because I felt like I was gonna have a panic attack.Alright so of any of ya'll know how to take rust off without taking the finish off of the gun too I would appreciate some advice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Get a can of WD-40 and one of those nylon/synthetic scratch pads that they make for teflon coated cookware, as it is less prone to damaging any surface finish....

It will take a lot of elbow effort, but worth it in the long run...

I don't know if they still produce it, but I think it was Outers that produced a product called "Rust Ridder" that was excellent for rust removal....Somewhere, I have a can in my cleaning box, just can't find it offhand.

A third choice would be some Liquid Wrench, but I'm not sure of the effect on any bluing/primary finish...

A Benelli Nova is just about the easiest gun to take apart there is. First you take the mag cap off the end of the mag tube, lift the barrel off, use the nipple end of the mag cap to push out both trigger group pins. Trigger group lifts out, turn the bolt slightly and it lifts out....can't really take one apart much more than that.

Once you get it apart, and the rust removed, it wouldn't be a bad idea to coat the underside of the barrel and whatever else is rusting up on you. I put a coat of neutral Kiwi shoe polish on the underside of my rifles/shotguns and then buff it lightly, then add a second coat. When I bed my rifles I use that Kiwi for a release agent and do not remove it from the action for the very reason that it will fend off moisture/rust. It will greatly reduce the rust issue your seeing. Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.

To prevent this from happening in the future use Breakfree CLP on the metal surfaces and swab the inside of the barrel with it. Years of hunting the salt marsh with an 870 taught me that.

Alright guys thanks alot.I got some of it off using RemOil but I'll bust out the WD-40 and see if that wont take the rest of it off.I think in the future Im going to start taking the gun apart every time Im done using it just so it doesnt rust again. It really is an easy gun to take apart. But it took me awhile because the cap was rusted on a little bit.But its good now so thanks ya'll. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have a new in box Benelli Nova. You could buy it from me and give it to the big man and he would really think you took good care of his gun.
