Benelli Supernova Tactical for Coyotes

Hey Guys,

So I went to my local gun store (generally a mistake) and I saw one of these Benelli Supernova Tactical's on the used shelf. I picked it up and it was nice, it felt surprisingly good to me.. I liked the sights and the overall feel of the gun.

I have long guns, but no coyote hunting shotgun. What do you guys think about this gun, or would I be better suited with coyote shotgun? Every gun has its place and Im not terribly sure that I would need a coyote shotgun all the time, but there are a few places where it would be nice to have something.

While I am here.. What about a price check.. They are asking $475.00 I have looked on line and I see them selling for $425.00ish.

For those of yall that are shooting coyotes with shotguns what kind of shells are you shooting?

Thanks for looking!

Calvin

Heres a pic... Yall let me know if its too "tacticool"....

I use an auto loader. Much easier on the shoulder when you're shooting #4 buck. Just my $.02. Mine is a Beretta 390 just b/c I haven't had the funds to buy a Benelli M2 yet.

Yes, it is a factory cylinder bore.
Having used a cylinder bore previously, fro over 15 years...an Ithaca M37 shooting #4 Buckshot...my opinion is that you're looking at a 30-35 yd gun, at best.

You mentioned that it was on the "used" shelf, so no...IMHO...I personally wouldn't pay that much. IF I could get it for $100-$150 less, then I might consider it in a pinch situation.

You used the term "coyote shotgun" a couple of times.
As far as I know, no one makes a shotgun specifically designed just for coyote hunting. So your term is really open to each individual's point of view.
Some guys just use their basic "wingshooting" gun, regardless of brand.
Others use shorter-barreled guns intended for turkeys.
Some shoot pump guns, while others shoot semi-autos.
It all comes down to personal preference.

As for choke constrictions, and different ammo...I suggest you check out the thread that is "stickied" near the top of this page. Tons of very useful info.

if its a fixed choke just move on. I wouldn't buy it(for predator hunting that is) for half that due to the fixed choke.

Thanks for the response!

So i called and talked to the gunshop, and the guy told me that it was worth around 500 because they aren't being made anymore... And they didn't want to take advantage of anybody, so they had it marked down another $25.. They are awfully considerate there.... Im with you.. I think being in used condition its worth about 375...

I guess I used the term "coyote shotgun" due to that would be my application for it. I do realize that any shotgun could technically be used to hunt predators just the same as any rifle can be used to hunt predators, its just some will do it more effectively that others. I agree with you that it is all personal preference. I dont currently have a shotgun that I would feel comfortable taking to the field with me.
I guess my perazzi's would fold up a yote with IM/F.
Haha that would be a heck of a picture. So Iam kinda on the hunt for a field gun for predators.

I guess ultimately my question was would you use this to hunt predator.

It seems like the response lean towards the limiting factor of this being a decent predator gun is the lack of chokes..
This is no hill for a stepper. I talked to my Briley rep and he said that they can choke it no problem..

So I would throwing chokes in this thing change the popular opinion?

I saw that thread and glanced through it! I need to study it a bit!

Thanks again!

If you can get someone to thread it for screw-in chokes, then yes, it would be something that I would use.
BUT, in order to feel comfortable spending the funds to do so...I would definitely have to get the gun at a cheaper price.
However, I normally am a cheapskate, so take it with a grain of salt. hahahaha

I'd agree with the pass crowd.....I had a Benelli Nova tactical and it's a fun shot gun and it was a tack driver with slugs but with that cylinder bore and no choke system you're very limited and getting a chrome lined barrel like that threaded for chokes is pricey.

inkballedtarget, if you are shooting Perazzi shotguns at targets get a field gun or waterfowl gun that fits you very similar to your Perazzi.

Many of the shots you can get on coyotes are much more similar to shooting birds or flying targets than they are like shooting a standing turkey in the head.

If you can hit flying targets with a regular shotgun you won't have any trouble shooting coyotes with the same gun.

If the shotgun you normally shoot does not have sights on it and a pistol grip on it then all the sights and pistol grip are going to do is slow you down.

You just don't see very many tactical or turkey shotguns at Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays shoots.

This is sound logic, I guess I was looking at it from the same angle, just the other side. I have been shooting a lot of ARs and this seemed to be similar. And it felt good!
