Bering optics Stimulus

I got to spend a little time behind one yesterday. My initial thoughts...

Not a bad little unit for under $1,500. I'd be comfortable with shots out to 200 yards, but, for me, that would be pushing it. With a 256 core instead of 384, Bering Optics was smart to go with 2.3 native magnification vs the Hogster-r 35mm 2.0 since every little bit helps and the 2x is virtually worthless. To be honest, it's hard to be objective when you're comparing the stimulus to the Super Hogster, but it's still a decent unit. Humidity was low,so I can't tell you how it would do at higher levels. For someone who wants to get into the thermal game but doesn't want to spend a lot, Bering Optics has the answer.

Rookiejx2, I tested one a few weeks ago as well. Bering's benchmark is to have an offering in the same price space as the Thor LT thermals. I believe they have a legitimate contender for that market space.

You are correct, there is enough magnification to shoot to 150-200 yards However, PID isn't always possible at those ranges with this thermal. The following is an example why I hesitated to recommend it for immediate sale for Night Goggles, and why I recommended Tom Austin of Night Goggles review it as well. I came across an animal 75-100 yards away. I was 80% sure it was a rabbit based on the overall shape and size. However, I would not have taken a shot because I could not tell. It was curled up, so the ears and other distinguishing features were not distinguishable. I pulled up the Phenom and Super Hogster, and I could make out the ears and eyes, and knew 100% it was a rabbit. The animal was clearly visible and it would have been a relatively easy shot for the Stimulus, but the issue with Positive ID is a painful reality with lower resolution scopes and this includes the Stimulus.

I think it is OK for what it is, but my worry is small deer and other animals potentially being shot when hunters think they are coyotes. Night Goggles is doing further review on the Stimulus to determine if we will carry it or not. I planned to write up a review once our final decision is made.

There is no PIP on the unit because as you said digital zoom is virtually worthless.

You're much better at reviews than I am! I wonder if the stimulus would be better suited to PID hogs vs coyotes due to their body type. PID is always an issue, especially when you're WANTING something to be a coyote. Last night, I saw a few deer at 400 yards with my Phenom. I looked through my super hogster, still a deer. Back to the Phenom, still a deer.

Personally, I believe the Hogster-r 35mm is a better buy due to the better core, but the stimulus fills the lower budget yet decent scope void.
