Seen the Kleen-bore safety clad blue rod, seen the Dewey. Seen the Hoppes. Used several of the three piece rods. They all are flimsy and seem to bend easily. What is the best? And who makes a good 17 cal bore brush that does not flatten after several strokes?

I spent the extra $$ on a dewey after being dissapointed with the other offerings like you are. One piece, nylon coated rod, perfect stiffness, great bearings, I really could not ask for anything more in a .17 rod. Haven't tried the kleen bore, but I have no reason to since I'm so happy with my dewey.

As for brushes, I don't use them so I can't help.

Has anyone tried the Tipton graghite rod. Its either perfectly straight or broken. I hear they are excellant untill the tip breaks off?

I've got Dewey, Proshot and Tipton .17 caliber rods.

The Tipton is by FAR my favorite. Just plain a better mouse trap, in my opinion. Proshot would be my second choice.

Don't know if it's the best, but I use the Dewey rod. They're all I use no matter what the caliber. A .17 caliber rod is going to be flimsy and bend easily just by nature of being a little, skinny .17 caliber rod. You just have to take it slow and easy when shoving it down the bore.

I use the bronze bore brushes from Sinclair.

DAA, what do you like better about the tipton? I've never tried or seen one just been getting j dewey. I'm always ready to hear about something better

I'M A FORMER DEWEY USER. BUT I'VE REALLY LEARNED TO LIKE THE TIPTON CARBON FIBER RODS, THE COATING DOESN'T WEAR OFF BECAUSE THERE IS ON COATING, THEY ARE SOLID. ALSO THEY ARE STIFFER THAN THE DEWEYS. JUST LIKE SEVEN UP, TRY 'EM, YOU'LL LIKE 'EM.

DAA,
On your word I'm going to hold out for the Tipton. I have the Tipton rod for my 22 and 24 caliber rifles. It's my favorite. It is a better mousetrap. My gunsmith and barrel maker likes the Tipton as well but he uses a Dewey due to the tip breaking off after heavy use on the Tipton. This has not happened to me personally.
On a side note I received both of your DVD's this evening. The last ones are MIA. I suspect several employees. Look forward to the third.

The only negative I've read about the fiberglas rods is that one shattered while being used and left some fibers sticking in the users hand and he was advocating wearing leather gloves while using one.
I have Dewey rods and think they are great.

I like the Tipton better than the others because it is soooo much stiffer. Far, far less likely to abrade the lands than any of the others, wich it's not a question of whether they will abrade, but rather how badly they will. And, it does not take a bend. I've bent several Dewey's, and both of my Proshot's are bent too (the Proshot is a good bit stiffer than the Dewey, though). The Tipton will never be bent. Broke, perhaps, but not bent. .17 caliber rods are pretty fragile, no matter who makes them, but the Tipton is holding up a heckuva lot better than the others ever dreamed of. I've got a Boretech too -- forgot to mention it above, much nicer bearings than the Dewey, but otherwise still not as good as the Proshot (my opinion), let alone the Tipton. Speaking of bearings... The Tipton has a very nice handle and very good bearings, much nicer than the Dewey's. That's always been my main gripe with Dewey rods in general (I own a bucket full of them...). The bearings are not very good and stop working well after just a little bit of hard use.

Midway offers a 17 caliber rod in 26" and 36" . I'm leaning toward the 36" but they are sold out. DAA. Do you have the 26 or 36" rod?
