Best ammo for a 22-250

After deciding which gun to get I now have to pick which ammo will shoot the best out of my gun. I am going to buy a Savage 12fv in 22-250 and I was wondering which ammo you guys think would be the best choice. I want one that will have the least pelt damage.

Are you going to shoot factory ammo? I shoot factory ammo with my Ruger 22-250 and I use Hornady 50 grain Vmax. I am quite happy with what little pelt damage there is.

I eagerly await everyones respone to this question........

I can tell you that the Nosler Ballistic Tip 55 grain and the Sierra Blitzking 55 grain both leave massive exit wounds in some cases.

wherdog, How do the 50's do in the wind?

I too would like to know what everyone thinks about this question..just from my hours of research on this topic..the consensus seems to be the Hornady 50 or 55 grain factory load...thats what I will probably use in my new Stevens 22-250

Every barrel is different and like different ammo. I have just gone through the buy and shoot to find the load mine likes. 1st tip - Go get the cheapest you can find (probably white box Winchester JHP's) and go have fun shooting for about 50-75 rounds. Clean after every 15-20 rounds through the barrel. After that first 75 rounds, then go buy about 3 boxes of ammo, in or near the grain bullet you are wanting to shoot. I shot Hornady Vmax 50gr, 55gr, and Federal 55gr. I found that my gun likes the Hornady VMax 50gr the best. With about 90 rounds through the barrel I am getting sub 1" groups at 200 yds. Have fun with it man, and don't get frustrated at first. You have to break that barrel in a little before you try and find the right load. Good Luck!

for me it's only 50gr,
Ballistic Tip,
Federal, rem or Win, buy one of each try it,
Then, fill youre safe with the good one ...héhé

cornstalker, I really haven't used it that much in the wind. I mainly call when the wind is below 10 mph. At that, it isn't too bad.

Its hard to beat a 55 Gr PSP. But if your gun will shoot them well I had real good luck with 55 Gr power lokt hp's. Best bet is to pick a bullet your gun likes and take chest shots when possible.

If I were buying factory in a high volume gun like the 22-250 I think I would go with the Winchester white box. They shoot good and are cheaper. Hard to say cheap anymore when speaking of todays prices.

I have settled on the 50 gr ballistic tips for open ground. Well placed shots will yield less damage with tiny entrance and no exit.
Close or poor placed shots are more likely to render damage or even ugly results. Still the percentage of bad ones for me has been low. For close or thick stuff I shift to the dependable 55 gr pointed soft point. It produce consistent damage with small entrance-small exit and does well when hitting bone too.
For brand recommendations I have had great success including photos of results here, Remington Accutip, Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip which is a Nosler coated with Lubalox, and Remington or Federal pointed soft point. Hornady VMax work too but right now I take the Accutips and Winchesters first.
The Winchester White Box 45's shoot well and kill fine @ about $26 box. For me they don't handle the wind quite as well but more so they seem to foul the barrel much faster. Good Luck
