Best bait for Coyotes?

1. Dead Horse

2. Dead Cow

3. Dead Deer

Bigger the animal the better. This gives them time to visit the site several times before having all the meat devoured. Position yourself downwind from the site at about 200 or so yards. You will want a spot that puts you above or slightly above the site.

The kicker (not kicking much if dead--Ha!) is to CALL THE COYOTES AWAY FROM THE CARCASS so they don't associate danger with the carcass they're feeding on. This is what Carpenteri does. He's a good predator hunter.

Good Hunting!

danurve,

That looks like an enticing lil product. I have not used it.

I can't believe you have a season up there, it's always season here in Texas. In October i'll one thing on my mind. Deer season. Nov. 1 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

A guy I work with shot 16 coyotes off 1 dead steer in his pasture about 120 yds from his patio door, last winter they were crossing the Missouri river to eat it. he said he would get up in the morn look out his door, slide the door open and shoot 1 or 2. then pick them up and do it again the next day. once he said he shot one left it there, took a shower, looked out and there was another one and shot it. I always thought our west river yotes were stupid. thats why I mostly hunt west river, hehe.

a really good bait can be made from horse hoof trimmings . take a hand full ( the closeer to the frog the better) soak in water for about three day MINimum , in hot sun ( like making sun tea) , or you can boil it if its not warm enough out . simply pour off what you need into a spray bottle , and voila the best cover scent and lure i have found .( do not get it on you) unless you want to live like a hermit for a week or two )when used as a cover scent simply mist while calling , Jerry . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Interesting concept Jerry.

I have only been around a few horses when getting shod. But in all cases, the farm dogs were waiting in the wings to get their share of the left overs.

I wonder what the appeal is????

I don't see why a coyote wouldn't be much different.

I dont know much about what works, but I know for sure what wont work. Been driving by a CRP field that someone has dumped a couple of dead billy goats in every day for a couple of weeks now. Coyotes dont eat billy goats, and after driving downwind from them I can understand why.
