Seems like a lot of talk about new guns... but what about beat worn out looking guns rusted and scratched you bought cheap and you use a lot?
I picked up a cheap 12 gage double barrel sbs stoeger that was parked on the floor in the back of the rack. picked it up way less than half new $$. can't wait to try it. It is going under the truck seat. Going to use for varmits and birds. Curious to hear what others have bought like this and use often.

Wasn't beat up at all.... Stevens 200 in .223 with a Redfield 3-9 scope for $250 at a LGS... Nice rifle after some tweaks on trigger and stock.

Got a Remington 1100 3" w/30" full that I upgraded in a trade and cash to a 28" with tubes for $280 (total for gun and barrel deal) from a guy who could never fget it to shoot 3 times in a row... Let's see 75 cent O ring and it was good to go!

An SKS that I bought when I turned 18. I think I paid 160 bucks and beat the [beeep] out of it and never cleaned it. I had it and a couple AK's till my "shoot as many rounds as I can" phase ended.

I bought a beat up Remington 700 in 6MM Rem from my local gunshop back in the late 80's. I intended to turn it into a 6MMAI but decided instead to use it for groundhogs that summer.
Now 25 years later and I'm still using it just the way I bought it. It stll shoots great and still has the rattle can paint job I put on it the first day I had it.

It goes with me on more stands than any other gun.

H&R handy gun II 22 HORNET single shot with a full length front forearm. Bought it used for $80.00 bucks back in the 80's Killed some stuff with it, and sold to a friend who owned it for 25 yrs and he and his dad shot a truckload of turkeys and acouple nice bucks with it.
I bought it the second time for 175.00.lol Killed a few more bucks with it, and then sold it again to a close friends son. After seeing me carry it one day he bugged me everytime i saw him after that wanting that gun. This spring i surprised him when he asked and told him yes. I can see that old hornet killing alot of stuff for yet another young man.

One that is over looked most is a good solid single barrel shotgun. Carry some #4 or 00 buck and a few #6's. They are great for that fast shot. Now, you can not carry a loaded firearm in a truck but you can keep shells in the bed of your truck in a ammo box. Check state laws of firing from a roadway. But if you are on your own land away from the roadway take the shot. Breaking state gun laws on transport of firearm is good for a few months in jail. Keep what ever you choose in a gun case behind the seat.

2 used guns that were cheap by today's standards that I've had a lot of fun with:

870 Express, ex-police, picked out from a barrel of em at a gun show and bought for $175. Killed upwards of 20 deer with that thing.

Ruger SS .357 Security Six. Carried a lot, shot very little, bought for $300 5/6 years ago. I don't know who owned it but that thing has the sweetest, worked over SA trigger and is accurate as all get out. Talkin 1.5" @ 50 and 4" at 100 kinda accurate.

Picked up a like new,NE Arms youth 20 ga. for $50 at a pawn shop. Short and rides well in saddle scabbard in jeep. Great for making good rattlesnakes out of bad ones.

Regards,
hm

a 22 long rifle, must of had it for 24 - 25 years, killed everything from dove, grey squriels, red foxes and groundhogs and everything in between!!!!

marlin bolt action youth model, it had a $7 scope on it, after 1 year it still has a bushnell 4x scope

there must be 15,000 rounds thru it, and its still going strong

Marlin 1894cl 25/20wcf pick it up real cheap it was in about as bad shape as one of them rescued dogs you see on tv. Bore was rusted up, well about all of it was rusted up. Ordered some parts cleaned it up and in a few months I had it shooting 1 1/2 inch groups @ 100 yards with iron sights. I think after all the work I did to it I spent $200. Got more in 25/20 brass then I do the rifle.

I started hunting with a breech loading Stevens shotgun that I got at a pawn shop for $80.

I bought a breech loading HR Handi rifle for my daughter in .223 with scope for $100 and it is a tack driver. Great for kids and new hunters.

I cleaned up the stoeger .. more like big ugly --oiled the stock, cleaned inside the barrels, lubed up moving parts, then the fun began. The barrels may or may not be marked have not looked real hard yet but dealer gaged them while I was there and he said modified and improved. Took it out back to pattern it -- rems and wins #4's and 5's 2-3/4 high brass... with short barrels..... sweet. Nice even pattern.... in the woods I might take this turkey hunting.

Remington field master .22lr pump got it fir free it was rolling around in the back seat of my buddy's samurai. I offered him cash but he said take it. cleaned it up and she shots flawlessly and accurate too

Chuckle, tough question for me to answer. Have stumbled across a couple of sporterized 1903 Springfields that looked pretty bad externally, stock and etc. But bores in them pretty darn good. After some tender loving care by me....darn nice rifles that shoot well. Use one of them in our private ranges monthly surplus rifle competition with decent results. Usually finish in middle of competitors with my 1903 rifle. Another example, pawnshop find of a 6mm Remington rifle made by BSA for a company named Herters back in the late 60s or very early 70s. LOL, wasn't sure about the bore when I first examined the rifle in the pawnshop....not sure it had ever been cleaned. After an hour or two of cleaning the bore with several different bore cleaners...discovered bore was in excellent condition. Trigger leaves something to be desired on the BSA, but jeeeeez can it shoot a tight group.

I've bought a lot of used guns that I like and still own most of them.
But I'd have to say my fav is an old Savage Model 24 over/under in 22LR/410. I just love it for small game hunting. Taken many a rabbit and squirrel with it.

....a Stevens 311 in 12ga. 3"magnum, with 30" barrels, vent rib, choked mod and full, for $100.00. A Savage lefty Model 11, synthetic stock chambered in .250 Savage, for $230.00. A Marlin 336 chambered in .44 Rem. Magnum for $125.00. A Winchester Model 255 lever chambered in .22WMR for, after a series of trades, $55.00. A Remington 572 semi-auto .22 for $40.00. And the list goes on and on and on.....

I love deals like these.

Years ago I made a great deal ($100) on a Mossberg 30-30 with a scope. I traded it to a guy for a Savage Model 110 7mag left-hand. I shot that rifle for 25+ years.

I was debating taking it to Newfoundland to hunt moose in 2011. I decided to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation at the Canadian border and had a cop friend of mine run the serial number. The rifle turned out to be stolen and what was really strange was that the insurance company (or owner?) wanted it back. I figured that I had gotten my $100 out of it, so back it went.

I bought a Remington 7 mag for the moose hunt.

I bought a used Savage 110 first generation rifle for $175 including rings, bases, and a 3-9 Charles Daly scope. The rifle had been rebarreled to .25-06. I have no idea who the barrel manufacturer was, but that rifle is a definite shooter. I have taken a lot of deer, a few groundhogs, and a coyote or two with the rifle.

The scope was bad and I walked into an Otasco and swapped it out for a new one at no charge. The new Charles Daly scope went on a gun I was selling and I put a nice scope on the Savage. That was in the mid 1980s. The rifle is still here.
