Best choke and shell

Well I here so many good things bout "black cloud" shells buy federal but them suckers are $27 bucks a box, and I know that there many chokes out there that are made specially for it.

So I was wanderin if there was some good chokes out there and other ammo as well that would do just as good a job. Now I am aware that waterfowl shells are goin to be more expensive and thats not a problem I am just curious as to the sucess that everone else has had with something different.

I know as well that chokes can be pricy to and that doesn't bother me either cuz you only have to spend the money on that once. I just want to get a good all around choke that I can use with just bout any waterfowl shell.

Any input would be great THANX

I shoot t's for goose (remingtons pattern the worst) and 2's for duck. The
federals seem to be the best. Don't go full choke with steel. ( 3 inch )

It usually destroys your pattern. You should pattern your gun anyway with
steel to find the best choke. In most cases , if not all , full will not be the best.
Steel shot does not compress like lead so it has to move in the wad cup as
it is choked.

Got talked into "Black Cloud" by my son this year. Bought two cases BB and #2's. We just came back from Manitoba hunting for the week. First part of the week we hunted geese then mid-way thru went west and hunted ducks. I must say it did do well. yes pricey. We shot the equivilent of one case of shells. Dropped the geese well as did the ducks, very, very few cripples. As far as chokes goes. If your using steel manufacturer's state on BBB nothing more that modified choke. You can go to IM on BB and #2's. As far as brand, I call Carlson Chokes in Atwood Kanasas and talk to their technitions there. There people not only make the chokes but hunt with them also. For a moderate priced choke they are good and their advice is tops.

The manufacturers are the one's saying than. Modified wether coming with the "gun" or buying later is still modified. Because of the size of BBB is half the size again of BB and I know steel shot doesn't compress. I do know that all chokes are not made alike. Personally I like the extended choke. The idea of the choke with plastic wads is to catch or slow the wad down so it will open up. Now those Black Clouds the wad is totaly different than conventional wads in their function. I recovered one. I noticed right from the get-go they were following the shot 3 times further than conventional one piece or two piece wad.

I would spend the extra money for the black cloud. I used it last year and had significantly less cripples which meant less shots fired and wounded birds. I use a Carlson's Black Cloud choke, they run about $50 but that is cheap compared to the competition.

The Carlson's BC choke patterns well with normal steel loads as well. If you don't want to spend the money for BC ammo then I highly recommend Kent Fast Steel #1's for big ducks and #BBB for geese. The kent has always done well for me and is about $20/box.

rkhood,

I have killed alot of geese and have even guided for a few years. I would say that you have been given some very sound
advise, mostly regarding the patterning of YOUR gun with different choke/load combos.
Regarding Black cloud,I like it but will not ever use it again?!?!? For me I find it does not kill any better then
my stand by load of Kent Fast steel 1 9/16oz BB and far more important to me my load does not have any spherical banded flight stopper pellets that I find drag feather and bone fragments all through my dinner!.....I am going to eat this thing after I perforate it!

as for chokes again sound advise on shot sizes and restrictions. I use a Beretta Extrema 2 with k/o and the factory Improved Modified choke for long shots on geese
and I use Improved Cyl for decoying ducks (3"kent#3)
this works for me! hope it helps you a little.

ATKINS and JONATHAN thanx for all your input and avice and I have gotten a lot of needed advice from this one thread.

I knew when I posted this thread that I would need to just go out my self and try different things, but to here from everyone and their experiences helps me not to waste a lot of hard earned money.

So once again THANX

rkhood ,

I would say you have a sound game plan and I also like to talk to others to try and weed out the expensive useless
stuff that is all the rage at the gun shop!

if you could give me a few more specifics ie, range, gun, shell length chokes that you have at your disposal I would be only to happy to try to get you headed in the right direction.....or at least help save a few patterning rounds

winchester HV Expert 2 bb 3.5-3" with a full ok for steel from carlson and I love it I shot a ringer at over 70 yards and killed it dead I to do some guiding so I shoot last. Finding a choke tube is all up to you my pattern is small up close but when I hit I kill most of the time. for water swatting it works the best for taking the head clean off the bird at 10-20yds

Good luck on your search hope you kill them all or atleast make it look good

only thing i would say is dont buy Kent Fast steel i had them jam in my 870 several times last season and also my buddy was shooting a mossberg pump in 3 1/2 and they jammed in his the brass is thinner than like Rem. Win. ect.. I would go with as said above a modified or full with either Rem. or Winchester BB for geese had good luck with that setup. Also i shoot alot of reloads to so not much factory ammo used anymore.

I used Black Cloud on sandhill crane last year and was really impressed with it. I used 2's-4's. The 3's seemed to work best out of my M2 full choked. I also did well with Mod choke.

Have shot Kent Fassteel for about four (I think) years now and LOVE it. Shoot a Benelli semi with factory chokes. Depends on where I am hunting as to what choke I am using. Decoying ducks, I will shoot Kent #2 or #4's out of stock IC choke tube.

Only time I have ever had gun jam was lying in frozeen field hunting geese and the action on gun froze shut on me first thing in the morning. Warm vehicle to frozen field didnt work the best for me.

Just my opnion, but it is what works for me.

I hate when people spread stupid rumors. I can tell you have no clue what your talking about. You recommend several brands with no shot charge and tell him to shoot bb through a full choke.

never had a jamming problem with Kent, I have shot them in my O/U, 870, 391 and my SBEII, never a problem and NEVER with a full choke.

Mod choke, with Winchester Dry lock #2's for all my hunting, that includes, ducks and geese. don't like to change out shells everytime the geese come in
