Best chuck shooting in the USA?

Speaking of numbers... I won't even say how many we get on a good day. Honestly, I don't think very many of you would believe me - it's more than most eastern guys get in a good year.

This is just a couple hours worth here.

I know what you mean about the itchy finger. Mine is getting REAL itchy. With the new baby coming soon, I won't be able to get out much this spring and summer either.

I've been working out of town so much lately the project hasn't been moving at all.

I'm still waiting for my first chuck hunt. I read up a little on these marmots and found out there are 4 kinds. Rockchucks are found in the Western US. Woodchucks are found in the Eastern US. But the NW section of the US (WA and ID) also has the Olympic marmot and the Hoary marmot. So based on those distributions, anywhere you go in Idaho you can find one of three species of chucks. I can't attest to quantity, but for variety, that would be my pick for "Best in the US".

See? I'm not the only one. These are the big Bubba cousins of ground squirrels and PD's. Now, I saved a post from our good buddy Ladobe, where he signed up you and I for Digger Wars II, remember? Unless we can convince DAA to take us upstate, this is as close to chucks as we're gonna' get.

Chucks???? chucks??????? Oh, you must mean groundhogs. Unless you are talking about those things out in the Sierra Nevadas that live in the rocks.....

NASA, don't you feel one leg getting a bit longer than the other.

Raised in Illinois, frequently visiting relatives in south-central Kentucky.... guess what I hunted during off-seasons.

Got my first 220 Swift when I was still a teenager. Real "groundhog" medicine!

Howdy Stormbringer!

Good to see your shiny face in here

. I didn't get any ammo loaded for the Nesika last night - Cindy ambushed me as soon as I got home. Will get to it tonight though. Then go over at lunch probably tomorrow and get both the .22-250AI's zeroed and I'll be good to go for Saturday. If we can just get a few days of decent weather strung together to finish out this week, I like our chances!

Hi Stormbringer

What part of Idaho are you talking about??

Steve, that's a Nesika "K", 29" Lilja 3 groove 8 twist, .22-250AI, Six HBR, Jewell, NF 8x32 set in Kelbly's on milled in place custom bases. I've got a .22BR barrel for it also.

Hell on wheels in the varmint patch.

Ain't she sweet?

Stormbringer,
Thanks! Looking for some places to hunt. Used to get some good shootin in WY years ago but lost those areas over time. Heard you guys had the real thing out there and between you and DAA, I believe it!! My work kinda took me away from gettin to shoot many critters but now that my 11 yr. old son is big enough to handle a rifle need to get back into the fun stuff. Gonna take him to MT for P-Dogs, how far are these areas from Missoula??

Hi DAA,
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO..WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! Sweet ain't the word!!! That baby can reach out and touch'em!! Is it a switch barrel rifle?? How do you like the .22BR?? Been looking to work with some of these. Have you seen anyone using any of the blown out 6BR's??

Steve,

yes it's a switch barrel. Only takes a few minutes to swap barrels.

I LOVE the .22BR! It's my favorite p-dog cartridge, bar none. My favorite all around varmint cartridge, for that matter. I've got two of them, and they get used more than all my other rifles combined during the summer months.

I've got a friend using a 6mm Dasher (blown out 6BR), and know a guy using a .22 Dasher. Neat cartridges, very. But seeing as how I already have the standard BR's and the .22-250AI's, there just isn't anything a Dasher can do that I don't already have covered with a lot less hassle. The guy I know with the .22 Dasher is only using 1 gr. less of the same powder to get the same velocity as I get with the .22-250AI (my barrel is 2" longer also). And he's pushing the ceiling of prudent pressure to do it - while the equivalent load in the .22-250AI is fairly pedestrian. Anyway, I DO think the blown out BR's are neat, very accurate and efficient. Just a bit of a hassle to form - especially the 6 (needs to be necked up, then back down to form a false shoulder for fireforming).

DAA,
That is very interesting. Do you have trouble forming the .22 BR or is your chamber made for the formed brass without neck reaming??? What brass to you use for forming?? Does your .22 BR duplicate std 22-250 vel??? and how hard is it on barrels???

A friend of mine has a 6BR wildcat that will shoot 5 inches or so with fireform loads at 1000. He uses it in 1000yd benchrest matches. His seems not to have the hassle of the Dasher's but all the benefits. I was looking to have rifles chambered to fit a formed .22 BR case without having to do all the extra work that some have to do.
