best coon hound for Iowa hunting??

if you're just starting out try a Black and Tan or a bluetick.Spend time in your decision hunt with sire, dam and older offspring from that cross or from the sire or dam.Be choosy, speak your mind and ask any question that pops in your head.I like Plotts myself but had to go through a slew to get what I liked. My best advice is to find a coon hunter you like and trust.Shut-up and listen to him and learn.Sort out the good and bad on your own while sitting home in the easy chair.
I am from Michigan and cant reccomend anybody your way but find out where the coon clubs are.Don't rush it take your time!! Good luck!

i think the best way is to hunt with who ever you can with as many different dogs you can to find out what you will like. i like my mountain curs around here we have small farms close together and a lot of rural homes and curs dont bark on trail only on tree or bayed. something to consider. huntswithcurs@hotmail.com

J.K. I hunted in Illinois as a kid and young man for a dozen years and my advise would be not to limit yourself to any one breed. During that time I hunted with just about every breed and combination I'd guess and just like people there's good and bad in every breed. Having said that, the best all-a-round dog I hunted with was a Black-n-tan hands down. Second would be a Walker, coldest nose was a Redbone and a good solid all-a-round dog as well. Most endurance was a Plott and the most heart was a Beagle, yea a Beagle. That little guy was unstopable, a little slow, but what a hoot to hunt with. I've hunted with a couple Currs that put up alot of coon if your not in it for the music, and some damn fine Blueticks. The flip side were a Bluetick that could not be broken from running deer, short of lead poisening. A plott that was the lyingest dog I've ever seen, Slick trees. A couple Black-n-tan dogs that were a dumb as a box of rocks and a English that was afraid of the dark. A Redbone that would would fight anything that got near the tree and another one that would leave the hottest coon trail for chance at a skunk.

But, they were all fun, the good the bad and the ugly.

J.K. That Beagle was just a fluke, I do not recomend it. It was fun to take him out once in a while just for laughs. The Black-n-tan is a good breed, hunt with as many of it's line as you can and pick one that's eager or bold. Good luck.
