Best Coyote Caliber?

out west where you are a 22-250 or 220 swift would be awsome. my .220 swift is a great shooter, but i wish i didnt buy it now. out here 200 yards would be a long shot when calling. if you want something just for coyotes at long long range like you have out there then id go with the swift or 22.250. the .223 a little closer. but if you dont care about hides then keep blastin the 7mm.

Whats long range? A 22-250 or a swift are not good 500 yard coyote calibers. I'd call 400 yards long range for most of us, the 223 is not even in the ball park at that kind of range.
Resonable shots on predators are what should be thought of when buying a predator rifle. Most shots are close, under a 100 yards even in the west or southwest. A 223 or anything in it's class would fit the bill.
Most of the older more serious predator callers use 22-250s because they can reach out a little futher on coyote sized animals, but that's usually not needed in most cases.

So whats the best coyote caliber? don't ask me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif...lol

i have no experiance with hunting in the west, i just know its flatter and much most open then here in the hills. here i know my shots may push 200 yards but most 50 to 75. i use a swift, its overkill. our coyotes are larger in the east but not as many. your just as likely to have a fox or bobcat come into a distress call as a coyote. and then my swift is definatly overkill. this is why ive decided to order a custom .19 badger from calhoon. still has the range for the long shots, power for coyotes, but wont blow up the fox like the 22 cal will.
so the best coyote caliber is a trick question, depends on where you hunt, how you hunt, and what your doing with the hides.

I really like shooting the .223 and even tho I have not killed a yote yet (I'm trying again in the morning) the .223 Kel tec semi auto with a low power scope is what I tote for under 200 yd shots. I have an H & R Ultra Varmint for mountain hunting where I may have a longer shot, since it has a longer 24" barrel and high power Nikon scope. Both weapons shoot like a dream. My longest shot wold probably not be over 250 yards ever, so the .223 is perfect. I usually have a .22 magnum Ruger Single Six on my hip for close in shots/dispatches, or maybe a .38 S&W or .45 P90 Ruger if I'm alone or in bear/hog areas. I have a Marlin .22 mag for gamelands use where centerfires are restricted.

I'd like to try the new NEF barrels with faster twist in .223 to see how well it shoots the 70-80 grain bullets. That would make my one-caliber rifle battery very versatile. Anyone have any experience with their new faster twist barrels? I'm not hijacking the thread, make a new post if posssible and I'll get it.

Best cals out there are .223, 22-250, 243, 204, 220, 25-06. Best the most popular and most used would have to be 223 and 22-250. hope this helps.
