Best deer slugs in a rifled barrel?

I tried a bunch out of my rifled 1100 and settled on the Accutips. It sucks that I have 3 or 4 boxes of the SSTs that I can't get rid of, even at $7/box

I acraglassed my savage 220 and tested about 6 to 8 different saboted slugs at the time I did this five years ago. Bought to hunt out of state where it was shotgun only. Now rules have changed so I can use my ruger American 450 BS. The gun wears a Nikon monarch 2.5x10 40 mm optic and DNZ scope mount. The tightest grouping slugs were 3" Remington accutips in my gun. The gun shot a 3/4" group center to center at a 100 yards. I dropped two doe where they stood that year and haven't shot it since. Before glassing the average group size was around 2 3/4" with the tightest about 1.75"...after glassing you can see my target results and all the other loads I tested again and they shrunk to 1.25" to 1.75". I didn't even use a ton of acraglass just enough to lock the action in place, but it sure did the trick. Don't use it but it shoots to good I can't bear to sell it. I bought a case of slugs for it at the time sitting next to the gun in my safe.

The Buckhammers have been discontinued for some time. Too bad since they shot so well and were not expensive.

When you find a slug you like, after spending a few seasons with it, they discontinue them. Frustrating !
 
i've shot a load of different deer slugs. the best knock down probably out of any slugs is a lightfield. the lead is soft enough it will actually expand and flaten out. unlike brenneke slugs that are hardened lead or like your typical HP Tipped slug. the lightfield will knock the snot out of most things.
 
I grew up on H&R bull barrel rifled slug guns. Nothing hits harder than a lightfield but they have the trajectory of a brick. About 5yrs ago we moved to Remington Accutips and I wouldn't be afraid to stretch the legs out to 300yd with those. Next year were debating trying the federal barnes sabots for similar trajectory but hopefully better mushrooming

I whole heartedly agree, with a 20ga i never had a lightfield pass through a deer. Always got to the opposite side and stopped just under the hide but they mushroom to between a quarter and half dollar.
