Best E caller for cats...REVISED

Quote:hm Is that an FX5 hanging in that 3rd pic? I'd like to see a bigger version of that picture so I can see what you've got going there.

At the time I was using a Mojo decoy. This setup was in some pretty tall grass/bushes and some very hard ground, so I hung the call on a rebar spike w/tubing socket at top for the Mojo spike.

The rebar spike has a crossbar so you can press it into hard dirt w/your foot and gets the decoy high enough to be seen from a distance over grass/weeds.

Cats are fairly territorial, and IMO, not the brightest bulb in the box. Have called this particular cat from same setup in both fall and summer:

Fall foliage/coat..........................................Summer foliage/coat, same tree in background

I've used the Foxpro probably 10 years or more, only complaint is the remote screen and small type is getting harder to see w/85 YO eyes. Never saw a need to replace it. I like the FP Jack daddy decoy a bit better than the old Mojo, as it has a remote, and the bird voice really gets the cat's attention.

The birds seem to think it looks more tasty than the critter's topper. The morning I took this picture, this was the first stand of the morning when this owl swooped in and carried off the topper, spit it out and walked back to check out the audio, I guess?? Next stand a second owl took the topper and deposited it in top of a dead tree several hundred yards away. Next stand a pair of owls landed on the fence and watched it a while before flying off. Last stand a hawk hit it, but dropped it a few feet from the decoy.

I just bought 200 name brand ÀÀs for $50. Tht is twenty changes of batteries and they last quite awhile, more than a few days. So it wasn't that expensive. Just the fact I can camp free and not have to pay for a campsite w/electricity pays for batteries for a year in one night.

With the price of two sets of rechargeable batteries and charger they better last more than a year. I still need throw aways if I'm not in my van.

I like the smaller size of that call it would work good 4 my needs size wise. I was looking at the promo video for the fusion with the nice remote, but can't find a fusion for sale online other than a couple used ones. Did FoxPro already discontinue it for some reason?

Even the cheaper rechargeable last several years. I can't tell you how many "toys" I have ruined by leaving standard batteries in too long between seasons/use. I know....but that's the main reason I went to the rechargeables; they can go dead and won't corrode your equipment.

Price wise, IDK how they compare, but they do fill a distinct notch in my gear, of course I don't have the AC power issue (unless last years total grid failure repeats itself

).

Looks like Foxpro may have dropped the Fusion, as it is no longer listed on their web site or All Predeator Calls, either.

and that is a good point. i have also screwed up a few things by forgetting to remove the batteries.

On the Fusion, do you know what year they started making them, and when they stopped? Will I be OK to just snag a used one? What I mean there isn't do you think the one I buy will be great, but if it does have an issue, is it likely I could just send it to FoxPro and pay them to repair it if it's out of warranty? What is FoxPfro's customer service like? Sorry for the ignorance, but I'm a new dog to the electronic hunt.

wow, i just looked on ebay for a fusion. only 2 listed. i would of bet there would of been a half dozen. guess most are holding on to them.

a heads up, one is buy it now, the other is an auction. the auction ends in a little over an hour. up to $209 a few minutes ago. if a guy could get it under $250 it would be a good buy.

Yup. I bought that one. Should have it before Christmas. I also found a brand new one plain white cheaper than what I gave for the used camo one, but it won't be here til early February. I'd of just bought it to start with if I could've gotten it right away. Hopefully the used one will be good to go and get me through the year and I'll have a back up.

I wonder if the reason the new one is shipping in a month and a half is they haven't actually quit making the fusion, but like many other manufacturers are dealing with right now they're waiting on parts from a vendor so decided to pull them from the website for the time being. Who knows will see I guess.

I would've bought a call from Rick but I wanted the more compact setup. I assume where there's a will there's a way with electronic files, but I imagine they've got an agreement of some sort so may not be doable even if it's doable. Years ago a friend of mine and his dad would take a small push button cassette player with a rabbit tape in it and literally turn it on and sling it out away from them into the field and they called quite a few so I"m still a step ahead of them even if I can't get Rick's stuff loaded.

back in the day of tape callers we would copy predator tape with a minute of blank at the beginning, set the call out, turn it on and then walk back to the hide before it would start playing.

We did the same thing! LOL

We thought were really hi tech when we put 15 seconds of silence after 12 minutes of sound playing so we knew how long we had been calling.

Many years we used one cassette tape for the entire season.

I put an 8 track tape in the truck I fed cows out of,long speaker wire and would put speakers on top of cab and park truck on fence rows on edge of fields or in edge of woods. We could hunt at night here then.Sometimes would leave motor running and have heater running. Not as many coyotes then ,but they were a lot easier to call it seems. I even had hair then and it was brown.

It's settled then, the best call for cats is an F150!

Yup. The same guys I know who gave their cassette player a toss sat in the pickup with the heater on at night in the winter. Coyotes see those same vehicles day in day out and they're used to them being left parked in the field over night. I've heard guys talk about gray fox running around under the pickup while it was running. I'd go with an F-250 though.
