Best factory .22 mag ammo for coyote?

If you were to limit your shots to a hundred yards or less the heavier bullet would be the better choice. If you are shooting beyond that get a centerfire rifle. My favorite is the 22-250.
 
I have plenty of long range rifles that can do the job (243, 7mm-08) I plan on using a .22 mag on occasion for up close hunting. Less than 100 yards.
 
Win. gray box 40 gr.
I would use the federal 50s but to hard to get locally and gray box 40 grainers are everywhere. They get the job done with in 80 yards or so.

stick with a 40 or 50 grain hp. I shot this coyote in my avatar with a 40 gr cci maxi mag hp. He died instantly when i shot him in the boiler room at 35 yards. you should test all the 40 grain stuff you can find and shoot whatever is most accurate in your gun. Most .22 mags are picky about ammo. With such a small round shot placement is critical so you need all the help you can get.Your set out to 125 yards.
 
Don't buy ammo, hit them in the head with the stock.....you will probably have fewer runners that way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
 
I shoot the Win 40g HP, killed a bunch of yotes with them.

I have not got the Federal 50's to shoot well in Ruger, Mauer 310, Browning, and Marlin 25, maybe yours will shoot them.

The Win 40g HP is extremely accurate in the above guns.

I suspect that the 50g Federal is a little too long for the twist in the above gun.
 
I use to only use the fed 50 gr.and have had great luck with them,shot many fox and coons all were DRT never shot any thing larger with them though. This year After doing tests with several rounds Im using the Win 40 jhp.They shoot a little better out of my 982 vs.The fed.are a little
less frangible which may or may not be a plus.In penitration tests the super x penitrated further but shed the jackets on most shots and weighed about 5 to 7 grains less when recovered,and definatly showed a lot of expantion.
The Fed 50's retained 48 t0 50 gr. on all shots.I really like what Ive seen so far but the jury is still out untill the end of the season.On bigger small game I like both these better than the 30-33gr.ammo.The lighter round did shoot better and flater but Im not sure of the down range energy.

I think I may buy a box of both and see what one shoots best. The win 40 jhp and fed 50 jhp seem to get alot of great reviews on other boards as well.

I have a Magnum Research 22 wmr that likes the Remington green box 40 grainers...when I bought it I bought a box of them and a box of Fed premium 30 grainers and they shot pretty bad. Haven't got to shoot a coyote with them yet but they did a pretty good number on a large coon Christmas night. Kinda hard to find the Remingtons locally... will try some Winchesters...after seeing the exit on the coon I wouldn't have any fear about shooting a coyote at shorter distances with them....
 
i bought some of that hornady v-max 30grain ammo and dispathed a coyote yesterday with it to see what it would do,,,,,,,, it out a hole a little bigger then a .22 but never exited ,, it hit the ground like a ton of rocks ,
 
I really think the guys intent on using the 22 Mag on coyotes will have ho humm results. I pretty much shot every bullet style there was at them, and had ZERO DRT. Not one, but I probably only shot 10 or 11 coyotes before I gave up. Kept searchin for the "perfect bullet". But ya, if you are ultra careful, it can be done.

Every one, and I was chest shooting, ran off. A 100 yard dash is not unusual, even with a proper shot. Don't be surprised if they go WAY farther. Your blood trail may be poor as well (likely).

What finally cured me of tryin to make the 22 mag work was this little coyote pictured below. I shot him out of a treestand at about 40 yards out with a Winchester 40 grain JHP grey box. The grail of 22 mag coyote bullets. Perfect shot, got both lungs. As usual, spin, spin, spin, dash. He runs about 60 yards and lays down, and expires. This is exactly how I found him. Thats the shortest I ever had one a run.

Moral..... shoot 'em close, give 'em a half hour, and have fresh trackin snow ..... you will need it. Don't care what bullet you use. They all worked equally poorly.
