Best firearm finish you’ve used?

With dura coat, cerakote, straight stainless, spray paint, etc. who uses what and what works best? I’ve made the habit of wiping down my rifles once I get back from stands in the snow or rain but found rust on a rifle today when I removed the stock. I’ve got a couple guns cerakoted now but most are still just blued. They taught cerakote in gunsmithing school but I’m sorta curious if it is the best.

Robar's black chrome will not rust or scratch off

Cerakote scratches off pretty easy

I have spray painted more than a few, touched them up as needed

Toughest firearms finish I have experience with is the finish applied to Glock and Smith & Wesson M&P pistols.

My preferred finish is bead blasted stainless or Melonite (different manufactures call it by different names, such as GC stated) treated finish.

I have two barrels and stocks that were professionally cerakoted and finish is not holding up to the thick brush I’m hunting in (I live near the coast).

I would say that the issue is the application, not the product. Both of my primary calling guns are Cerakoted, and ride around in the truck most of the year. There are scratches and dings, but its holding up well after 5 years on one, 2 on the other.

I agree with this, if you have your project properly prepped, and you go with an oven cure base, I believe you will be impressed... I use it on all my Steel actions and barrels that could be prone to rusting, and have very very good luck with it.

I paid to have the barrels and one action coated with a high temperature cerakote finish.

By the testimonials that I’m reading, than I need to have a discussion with them.

My blued guns are holding up much better to my hunting conditions than the cerakote.

We use temp cured Cerakote on our suppressors as well. I haven't counted but I would assume we put and pull our rifles out of our packs 100's of times throughout the year, Cerakote on the sides of our rifles, bolt knobs, and the walls of our suppressors are 100% still in tact, the end of our cans are not, it is wore off, but we just dust it off with an new layer every couple years. For reference the end of our cans are bearing all the weight of the rifles, while constantly rubbing on the bottom of the scabbard, not only while on our back, but while in the truck, they are bearing the brunt. Like I said, very impressive for something that is not anodized or blued, but actually sprayed on.

Another reason most choose Cerakote is because they actually have an option in colors. Couple that with the durability and IMHO it's the choice to go with.

Short of a few factory guns that were blued, all my guns have been Cerakoted so my sample size is obviously very small, but I've never had a gun cerakoted that I wasn't completely happy with the durability of the finish.

I own a 700 in 7mm R/M with a Melonite finish.
It is a nice finish for a hunting rifle.

Normally if parts I’m painting will fit in an oven I use kggunkote. It’s a great finish. It goes on thin and is flexible. I don’t media blast since I don’t have a cabinet. I use 1000gr paper or a pad and work the entire piece after I’ve done a good degrease. Then soap and water wash it. Rinse heavy. Wipe with alcohol. Heat parts to 125-150 degrees and spray. Then bake at 350 for an hour. Or 200 for 2 hours. I’ve used a lot of the finish and I love it.
