a .223 sporter weight rifle with 1:8 twist would be a better first rifle for predators. Like everyone said, lugging a heavy gun sucks. Another thing I don't like with a varmint gun is that they have a really long heavy barrel and balance far forward, so when its slung over your shoulder and you lean forward the whole gun falls forward. This is super annoying if you are negotiating steep terrain or even picking up your call off the ground. Try to keep the entire weight of the gun and scope around 7lbs.I like the tikka myself.
