Im trying to think of the 10 best gifts that we could give our children to welcome them and encourage them into the world of hunting,Predator calling and wildlife conservation.

My father-in-law gives a brick of 22LR shells to all the grandkids.
Before the grandkids came along all the sons and son-in-laws got them.

My grandpa always bought my hunting and fishing license for me for Christmas.

Time spent with them is just as, if not more important, than about any purchased gift.

Merry Christmas to all,
Clayman

I agree with all the others, your time is the most important thing you can give them.

The worst thing you can give them is a Bambi video. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

I have a 12 year old and 7 year old, I bring my boys Hunting as much as I can....best present that I have got them was a pellet rifle....teaches them about safety, how to handle a gun and most of all makes them feel independent.....and best of all if they make a mistake with respect to safety it will not be a fatal error.

my grandson is three he already has two hand calls that drives is mom and dad up the wall.so i am thinking about getting him some howlers.

No substitute for quality time outdoors /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif -- Only it produces the kind of enthusiasm that lasts a lifetime. Some of my early gifts were a pocket knife given at Christmas. A BB gun, and finally a .410 shotgun. MH

My favourite present as a kid was when Dad gave me his old Brno .22 one birthday. Other good presents can be knives, calls, or how about those little recurve bows, about 20lb draw or there abouts, perfect for kids to learn with. They might not kill much, but offer good target practice and are tonnes of fun. Then theres things like camo clothes, hats etc. Bipods, spotlights, new scopes... Oh sorry, I think that must be my own wish list...

I've always liked starting kids off (at age 5yrs) with a Daisy BB gun and a Bow add that to a bit of time in the woods for safety instruction and very small game hunting. Then each year after progress from a .177 pellet gun up to shotguns & center fire. I've had the privledge of introducing a lot of kids to hunting and shooting ( 3 of my own )and I am happy to say that most of them still hunt regularly ( one just turned 40 last month).

I fully aggree with all the others who said the #1 gift is your time , give freely of your knowledge, and most important be patient. Remember you are shaping the future of the sports we love.

Every year for Christmas a youngling I would get a new subscription of "Field and Stream" and "Outdoor Life" magazines. I have given my sons pellet rifles and camo clothing which they seem to love!

A BB gun, subscription to Predator Extreme,a coyote mountain man hat, new camo, any type of mouth calls, and one free pass to get out of school for a day to accompany mom or dad on the upcomming spring turkey hunt. I stay away from toy guns, trying to teach them the responsiblity and respect for a firearm right off the bat.

BB guns and hand calls. My six year old can call up crows with the call Santa got her last year and she is a dead-eye with the BB gun Daddy Trashcan got her last year also. My three year old (he's defenitely not ready for the BB gun like his sister, he's still a little um...irresponsable) gets camping stuff, tons of como gear, and a lot of books on the outdoors and animals.

Well guys this summer I started taking our 3 children to the mountains to do some exploratory road trips for hunting bear I wasn't really sure how it was going to work out because they are
20 months,3yrs and 7yrs old but with enough food and a FEW extras we managed just fine. The kids were always wanting to use the binocs to look for bear, grouse and other such critters and I would always bring the calls along for them to blow on along with the blueberries and short hikes up the road I know now that they are hooked. Now on weekends when my wife is working doubles all I hear from the kids is lets go to the mountains, lets go to the mountains. So I hope Im on the right road to making it fun for them. and tomorrow morning our 7yr old is going to receive her first camos and binoculars so we can go coyote calling together. Several of you guys have been a real encouragment to me talking about your childrens first deer, coyote or squirl. I hope someday I to have those stories to tell.

Merry Christmas and may God bless you.

what cs said!!! all the toys in the world won't mean much if you don't spend alot of time doing what they want even if it's not hunting!! but they will want to go just to be with you!! make it fun and they will love it and you!!

Well its after Christmas...but anytime is a good time for an outdoor gift...Time is the number one thing.

But in my mind the second best is a a set of Binos...you can get them cheap, cause they will get banged around some...

When my granddaughter was 3, she was learning to use my set of small bird hunting binos...she loved em...so I got her a very inexpensive set of Tascos 4x and she used them when camping, visiting the park, or at the house looking at birds, bunnys, and the neighbors dog...She called them her "Nock-u-lators"...

She is 4 1/2 now, and this fall, when the "Nock-u-lators" fell apart (Did I say cheap)I found her a set of Tasco "Cool FX" binos 8X...she calls them her "Ga-Nock-u-lators"...

She uses them more than I doo...I will never forget the camping trip this summer, when she spoted with her "Ga-Nock-u-lators" a pica in the rocks..my wife had never seen a pica, then my granddaughter spoted a marmot, and a bighorn sheep ram...then while driving back to camp, she fell asleep, and the "Ga-Nock-u-lators" were still tightly clasped in her hand.

"Ga-Nock-u-lators" make a great gift /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Bloodhound I just love that story. As anyone with young children can relate to the truly classic and precious memories children create. Their lanquage is all their own isn't it.

it is amazing how the words sneak into our vocabulary...I was typing a report for work the other day, and used the word "Dipty" The other thing is that she picks up words...she told me yesterday that the cake at her friends birthday party was, and I quote, "...Pathetic...that means it was really bad Papa"

Love tose kids.
