BEST GLASS at $1200

That sounds like a reviewer with a grudge. Everything I've read indicates they are on par with the swfa 5-20 and also the bushnell ET's. Seems to me the trend is about 50/50 bushnell/burris regarding the glass.

I'm impatiently waiting on mine, I guess we'll find out if it ever shows up.

The guys on snipers hide have had issues with Burris and Steiner. Sending them in for repair solved nothing. I would stay away if it were me and I own 2 Burris scopes. Had one previously and their CS soured me. The only reason I bought these was the clearance price. They hold zero on my AR. Might mount one on a 308.

I went with a docter. Found one pretty cheep, I'm not paying for quality turrets, gadgets that I won't use like high speed, zero stop , ffp. It seems like a plain quality hunting scope without the $ for the name Zeiss or swarovski. Time will tell. Il report back when I get it.

I have a 5-25 with the SCR reticle and love it

Issues with some of the new T series Steiner not tracking properly but it looks like that issue is solved, Burris and original Steiner are solid.

No love for the high end Bushnells? I don't have one but have read good reviews overall and an excellent warranty. For the money , I would buy one

I do hope the Burris is better than the one review because it falls in the category of what I want to spend. However, the review came from Iyla Koshkin's website and he is considered to be an optical expert.

Do you have a link to Iylas review?

Very good choice.

+1 for the $ it doesn't get much better. A very good "high economy" scope. I was just wanting less gadgets, more glass on this one.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I would like to know which scope has the best glass in regards to 1)resolution 2)clarity in this price range.

The scope also needs to be FFP with matching reticle and turrets.

Side note: Zeiss has great glass - bright and clear. However, last summer I was comparing my HD5 5-25x50 to a Leupold VX-3 6.5-20x40 with AO and the Leupold resolved detail better than the Zeiss. Both were clear - the Zeiss was bright, but I could see detail on leaves noticeably better with the Leupold at 75 yds and .223 bullet holes at 200 yds on paper better compared to the Zeiss.

In this price range off the top of my head we have the following scopes:

Bushnell Elite LRHS and Tactical scopes
Burris XTR II
SWFA SS 5-20x50
Weaver Tactical
Nightforce SHV FFP series

am I missing anything?
Thanks

I had the exact opposite experience. After my comparison I sold all Leupold scopes. I consider Leupold glass very overrated and their scopes overpriced compared to the competition. I have a hard time paying that kind of money for a scope with a Bushnell tag on it. Drove me crazy to buy a burris eliminator just because I associate the brand with low end optics. (optics on the eliminator are definately of lesser quality than the competition in that price range but you're not paying for optics your paying for convenience.)

So what glass did you settle on that is best in your opinion?

Well, glass quality isn't my top priority on some guns. I have 2 burris eliminator scopes that are extremely useful for their application but the glass quality is lacking. I have a Zeiss hd5 and love the glass but the turrets and zero so are less than ideal. 2 Nightforce nxs that function very well but they are heavy. My newest scope is a March 5-40x that I'm currently using for load testing. Honestly this scope is awesome but over 30x the image loses the extreme quality of the lower power and the side focus is touchy.

I don't own any IOR scopes right now but I am a big fan. Glass is better than Nightforce I like their fat turret and the focus is easy to use. (unless you are shooting their huge eliminator scope then the focus is very touchy but at 52x anything will be. Better glass than March in my opinion but heavy and relatively difficult to use)

I had some kahles binos that I really liked and when I changed to Leica geovids I honestly saw no upgrade in glass. I've never had a kahles scope but the have a very good reputation.

I think if this is purely a hunting scope and you aren't shooting long range or need exposed turrets I would find a used s&b or an IOR.

Me too.

Good turrets are more important to me than glass for long range stuff.

But if you have crappy turrets and excellent glass you can see your misses better.
