Best Long Range Caliber

260 Rem or 7-08 would be my choice. Both are easily 600yd deer cartridges. And I still run 2 308s on a regular basis.

My newest LR toy is a 7mm Mag built on a Remmy 700 action with a Krieger tube. 162gr A-maxes make great LR play toys and recoil is very tolerable in terms of performance achieved.......
 
I'd say 7mag. I love mine and the high bc bullets make 5-800 yards s breeze once you learn your gun. Unless you want to spend 100 bucks a box of ammo. I'll never get rid of my 7. I'm building a 308 for fun and to give my 7 a break
 
For deer size game, you can't beat the 7mm ultra mag with factory ammo. If you want to shoot 140 gr to 175 gr, I think this is probably the best factory round you can get.

For deer and larger size game, you can't beat the 300 ultra mag with factory ammo. If you want to shoot from 150 gr to 200 gr, I think this is probably the best factory round you can get.

In my opinion, there is not a round out there that beat these two in factory ammo offerings. I may be wrong, but I don't think so.

Now I don't consider 500 yards long range anymore. But around that range and if your not planing on taking any game at +600 yds I would go with a 6.5 Creedmoor.

Also I hate to say it but true long range shooting is not cheap! You may wanna setup to reload also as you may find it hard to get factory ammo that is good for long range hunting/shooting. Every person I know that can hit 1000+ yards and feels comfortable taking game out past 700 yards not a single one of them buys factory ammo!

If your just going to shoot target out 500+ yards and worried about price and recoil I would stick with the .243, or a 6.5 of some sort. If recoil is not a big factor then you can go with 30+ cal. but then your paying more for the ammo the bigger you go.
 
don't mean to hi jack the thread or anything, but did i make a good decision on getting a .223 for a solid 350-450 yard rifle for the field behind our yard? im wanting to get around 4 inch groups with factory loads at around 400 yards for both steel targets and coyotes if necessary
 
400 for a 223 is do-able. Don't try it with cheap ammo and expect awesome results. Time behind a rifle is more valuable than the caliber it's self.
 
so many options, so little time... 6xc, 260rem, 7wsm, 308, 338LM, 338NM... if your only going from 500-1K and looking to kill a dog, go with a smaller round and save yourself the $$$ in reloading components, if your planning on bigger game your gonna have to up the juice, build a 7wsm on a LA using the high BC of the vld's you could pound elk @ that range, if your looking for more yet, take a look at the ammo cost's befor you jump in and get too deep, with a box of LM ammo going for about 120$$$ for 20rds.

308 all kinds of ammo from surplus to comp. You can find it anywhere guns are sold. Not hard kicking and has range. So many guns around you can usually pick one up at a good deal.
