Best Long Range Cartridges for Coyotes??

Jim what rifle/cartridge/scope/ammo can achieve the accuracy needed to reliably hit one at 400-700 yds? they are a small and challenging target. they are tough. use enough gun. a .243 or a 6.5-284 ? a sako 85 heavy barrel, remington 700 with a krieger barrel.
 
My favorite is a 20-250 , second 22-243 AI.

Ive done goats at 400 yards with 25-06, passed 600 with 30-06. No issues with drt on the bigger animals with the 25.
 
You are either the best shot or the luckiest person on the board if you can hit a Coyote with anything at 700 yards. In your dreams I would say. Larry
 
If I had time to dial a 700 yd coyote ,I'd have no prob kill'n with my 223 AI. Heck I've done 640 many times on chucks.

I'm planning on a bait kill coyote at 6-700 with the 243 AI and 105's this winter.

Not sure what is so amazing about it. A good scope that has been dialed for the shot. An accurate repeatable rifle launching a well designed bullet. I'm not saying im slaying coyotes at that distance at a regular pace or that its just an easy everyday ordinary occurrence for any body, because it is most certainly not, but it is not some mythical feat.
 
There's a Youtube video of someone taking a coyote at 700+ yds. Forget the specs. I'll look for it and post the link.

There are multiple YouTube videos by some guys that call themselves The Dartman and The Neighbor. They are killing them at distances well beyond 700 yards.

It's not easy and I'm not making light of what the op is looking to do but it is certainly not unrealistic.

Just because you cant, doesn't mean there aren't others that can easily perform this task. Many on this site have been vetted as being thusly capable.
 
I just put together a 6.5 Creedmore for long distance shooting...I chose the 6.5 due to the wide range of bullets in that offer heavier weights and better Ballistic Coefficients than some available for the smaller calibers at longer ranges...I'm currently testing some 123gr HPs that have a BC of .512 and next will be the 143gr HPs that have a BC slightly higher...

With my 8-32x optic, it's more a matter of my ability to read wind than the limitations on the round or the rifle...

The Berger 130 hunting VLD bullets work well with that platform.
 
I haven't shot my 20-250 AI yet past 600 yds...but it will hit a spray paint can on it's side every time with Berger 55 gr bullets...from a bipod on the ground... it's only running around 3770 fps... but that's it's best accuracy node. It will do 4000 fps... but it's sweeter at 3770.

If it wouldn't shoot a coyote size target at 700 yds...I'd wrap it around a tree...LOL.

My 22-243 AI is no slouch either with 80 gr amaxes... and 90 gr bergers

Smartest thing I've seen on the board in a while...


I coyote sized target is very "do-able" at 700 yards if a man has put his time in. The problem while calling/hunting is having a rangefinder that will tell you accurately how far he is when you get out near that distance; especially farther (and not come back from tree, rock, hill behind/infront of him). A bait pile that's been ranged is little different. The right man could have some high % shots there.

A $3K rifle is worthless without a good range (when way past the point & shoot distance)...
