Best North American hunting caliber?

Wondering what everyone's thoughts were on what caliber would be the best for hunting all game in North America... Caliber, and why you think it is the best...

My vote goes to .308 win because of its reputation for accuracy across the board throughout time. Easy ammo to find, reload and it shoots bullets from 110 gr to 180 in factory loads. Enough punch for anything in the lower 48 inside of 300 yds.

I am having a hard time deciding between .308 Win and .270 Win... My heart tells me .308, but my head says that the .270 does everything the .308 can and then a little more... I would much rather take my .270 into the woods after and elk, brown bear or moose than I would my .308.

Caliber? or pet cartridge?
Caliber:

1st - 30 cal for sheer practicality
2nd - 7mm for pure sentimentality
3rd - 358 just because I love 35's

I would not hesitate to take a decent shot at an Elk or Moose with my 270, but with the possibilty of a Grizzly bear thrown in, I would say 30-06 minimum.

30-06 gets my vote.

One of the most popular cartridges in history. Probably mostly due to returning soldiers just being accustomed to their rifles that they were using in the service and then sporterizing them. But it is a tried and true cartridge that has taken every kind of game North America has to offer.

I would call the .308 Win a close second though. Lots of great things can be said about this cartridge and it isnt terribly different from the 30-06's performance (not comparing apples to apples here, but they are close enough). It is a very accurate cartridge and obviously the military would agree.

308 WIN

no dought no hesitation.

can kill everything in NA, marginal for the big bears but everything else will kill em with no problem.

just the right size for coyote (i dont like runners) all the way up to elk size game, not too big for smaller stuff but with good shot placement will take anything that walks on four feet and everything that walks on 2!!!

30-06 of course. Overtakes .308win in the heavier bullet selection.

Just in my family its taken. Coyote, deer, goat, sheep, caribou, elk, bear, moose. What else is left?

Id go 300 RUM. You can load it to 30-06 levels and then RAMP it up to uber magnum loads. 1 gun, every North American critter. Big game wise anyways.

Little varmints still need varmint calibers, IMHO.
