Best outdoor state?

OKay, i thought this could get into some good discussion, so I am wondering, what, in your opinion, is the best overall huntin/fishing/outdoor state? We aren't talking just predator hunting, but deer, pheasant, bigger game, varmints, predators, ducks etc... and lots of lakes to fish. Also, some nice places to camp, hike and just beautiful landscape helps.

I am from Minnesota, and I think that would be a good one due to its thousands and thousands of lakes, it has some beautiful landscape and some great big game/pheasant hunting, and pretty decent varmint/predator hunting.

Now, tell me your opinions on what state you like best for outdoor activity.

Montana,#1 i live here and my family owns enough ground to keep me huntin and fishin even if they shut down the rest of the state.#2 Tons of public ground including some of the best hunting areas in the country. #3 the hunting and fishing opportunitys are never ending,what else do you need?

Alaska has it all. Man it has to be the best state. They have awesome fishing, deer hunting, bear, moose, caribou, ptarmigan, etc. etc. etc. You can actually hunt wolves tthere. My vote is Alaska all the way.

I've hunted and spent alot of time in the wilds of Alaska and there is really no comparison. Having said that, you must remember that alot of Alaska is out of reach without the airplane (SuperCub prefered), so, my vote goes with my state of Montana. Accessible by anyone for most any outdoor activities. Truly a great place. Lots of public land.

Alaska Top 10.

* Larger than the next four largest states combined.
* 17 of the 20 highest peaks in the United States
* More coastline than the rest of the United States
* There are more than three million lakes
* More than 3,000 rivers
* Ten different mountain ranges
* No closed season on black bears and the limit is three
* Moose, bears, deer, caribou, wolves, etc to hunt
* Liberal gun laws (no concealed permit required, in the process of passing a law allowing you to shoot someone who is threatening bodily harm to you no matter where you are. Funny how people are polite up here).
* And finally, 656,425 square miles, ask permission to hunt someones land, your kidding right.

Just my opinion, and we all know what they say about opinions.
I agree with greg, alot is difficult to reach but by snow machine in the winter 5-6 months and floating rivers you can cover enormous amounts of area.

NONYA,
South of the Alaska range winters are not much different then those in Montana. Up here though is a different story, ya gotta live hard to be hard, lol, besides the -40 winters keep out the riff raff, won't mention from where the riff raff comes from but I am pretty sure you can guess.

You want to talk about riff raff,come to metro Atlanta! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gifI have been to Alaska twice /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif,once as a sight seeing deal(Anchorage area) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif when I lived at home with the parents.The other was a graduation present to Yakutat to go fishing for silver salmon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif.I think that state is as close to "Eden"as you can get,absolutely beautiful!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

I'll stick to TEXAS,,, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif You name it we have it. Mountains, desert, plains, forests, coastline, south Texas and hunting year around (exotics). Some of the best waterfowl, quail, pheasant hunting can be found here. As far as big game, just about anything from elk on down.
You say LAKES !!!! We have plenty of those too like Fork, Rayburn, Toledo Bend, Amistad, Richland-Chambers just to name a few. Throw in some of the best saltwater fishing.

Then we get into the varmint hunting. We are in a league of out own.

Hard to beat the weather too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The jobless rate in Montana is at an all time low, but that could very easily change. Many are moving here to get away from you know what. I can't fault them for that. We haven't had a good old fashioned winter here in a long time. When we do, there will be a mass exodus. If I was 25 years younger, I would convert a fishing vessel into a floating home and I would live in Southeast Alaska where it never rains /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I use to say WI for the large whitetail heard and awsome fishing but now just the fishing now that the WI DNR is attempting to eliminate the DEER /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif I've never been any where else but some day I want to go to AK. A huntin partner of mine's Mother lives in NOME and we are talking about doing some Wolf hunting in a few years /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

West Virginia. Trout fishing, bass fishing, catfishing, musky fishing, conoeing, whitetail deer, yotes, foxes, bobcats, turkey, grouse, squirrel, rabbits, coon. I'm within 10 miles of all of it and most of it I can do right out my back door on my own property which by the way is cheap and low on the taxes. If I travel a little there is also black bear hunting.
