If i had to choose just 1 powder it would definately be varget. Anywhere from 43-44.5 grains with a 165 or 168 grain bullet had always got me .5" results in almost all the 308's i have ever owned.
Gents I shoot with, who've reloaded their ammo much longer than me and have some darn nice shooting rifles prefer either Varget or RL15 for their 308 reloading. More of them prefer the Varget.
As for me, I prefer Ramshot TAC, which has given me some nice 4 shot groups in my 308. But main reason I use TAC is its a fine spherical powder that meters great and usually is lower priced than Varget. Never have tried RL15.
I've used Hodgdon BLC-2 in all my 5.56 and 7.62 gas guns for years and have a 48 pound supply, it is somewhat temperature sensitive, but here it Florida it is almost always hot and works well for me. This is for hunting applications, not benchrest.

Sssshhhhh!!! That stuff will blow your gun up
. That's what I keep reading on the inter webs. I like a little adventure and have been running the same load of it in my 223 for 12yrs now. I like life on the edge
. BTW, ran the same load in 100 degree NM temps and sub-zero VA temps while hunting. Never had any cook off in a dog town and haven't touched my zero other than switching scopes for years. Not a bench rest shooter, but in the AR six groups of five challenge on here, it kept my average around .6" at 100yds from my factory AR.

LOL, it even works extremely well at night in the pitch dark using my FLIR Thermal scope @ 175 yards, first round out of the cold barrel was the flyer....
I like Varget, IMR4895, AR-COMP. In my 308s and other 30cal rifles. There really is no "best" powder. You have to try to see if you like. Every firearm is different, my Rem700 Police, likes Varget, where as my Rem700 likes AR-COMP.
My SPS tactical likes BLC-2. I can't make it shoot Varget for some reason. The varget is funny. It shoots ok at 42 gr and ok at 46gr but hates everything in between
