I think it is about time for me to buy a new gun, so I need your opinions. What do ya'll think would be the best pig/hog gun? I am looking for suggestions for both a rifle and a handgun. I will only get one, but want your opinions on both. Oh, and cost will be a factor, so keep them reasonable.

Well you really can't go wrong with anything north of a .270. I've shot many with my .270 in a no frills 130gr bullet. Last time out in March I got some trigger time on hogs with a new .300 win mag. On my first stand I worked the bolt 3 times in 15 seconds and had 4 hogs down - all head shots within 120 yds. you really can't go wrong when you put lead just behind and below the ear. best luck.

Ok here we go from what i have seen in the last 10 years if you hit 'em right behine the ear you can kill 'em with just about anything even a 22mag ( IF YOU GET CLOSE ENOUGH) .Not recomended but in some cases it has happened .If i was to get me a new hogg killer it would be anything from a 243 to a 300 mag they'll all do a real good jog on 'em .

i would suggest a rem. mod. 7 in 7mm-08 ull be able to shoot deer with it too.
hey ur gunna spend over $700.on it but its a remington common they last foreever
and becuase of popularity they are easy to customise ive never had a prob with any of my remingtons i have 3 rifles and 3 shot guns
also a encore in 7mm-08 i also have 1
i say 7mm-08 but a any thing above 22.mag but i believe the 7mm-08 is the greatest hunting caliber ever made for meadium game like whitetails
or hogs
there was rumor goin around down here that a guy shot a hog that was like 10 foot and had 9inch tusks ne one heard this or am i hearing pork pies?

Tikka T3 Either the Lite model or The White tail. I pig hunt with a Remington 600 .308 and on occasion will use 180 grain Round nosed core-lokts. They work nicely.

I've handles a few of the new Tikas, and their actions are as smooth as butta!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I've already made up my mind that if I need (yeah right.....need) another rifle, it will be one of these Tikka's. Around here their goin about $450.

I've shot em with just about everything I own 22-250 , 6MMREM , 30-06 , and 8MM Mauser . They all work . Remington cameout with the 8x57 Mauser as a Classic Model this year . I would'nt pass up the thought of one of theese rifles for hogs . But as with any other thing caliber is less important than where you hit with what ya got . Stick to the middle deer cartrige chamberings and you wont go wrong . Granted this is for putting meat on the table . If your just looking for big tuskers , start with the 30-06 and go up from there .

Has anyone had a chance to kill hogs with a 45/70 in, say, a Marlin 1895? What were your results?

(Yeah, I know I just bumped a 3 year old thread)

I'm gonna say one of the following for your rifle:
Marlin 336C .35 Remington
Marlin 1895GG 45/70 guide gun
Marlin 444 .444 cal

and handgun: anything with a Ruger at the beginning.

I got really lucky yesterday. I am left handed, and I was in need of a new big game rifle. I was at the gun store to buy a light/laser for my 1911 but I also asked if he had any Left-handed rifles. his response was to show me a brand new Winchester Model 70 in left hand, it was 7mm remington mag. That's a really great cartridge. If you put that anywhere on a hog, your set.

That sounds like just about the worst Idea I have ever heard

I've probably killed more hogs with a .22 mag than anything else. I used to hunt a state WMA that only allowed archery, muzzle loaders and .22 rimfire.

One was a boar that went close to 300 pounds. I killed about a 200 pound sow with Ruger 10-22. The cover was thick and most shots were under 50 yards so I went with head shots.

This is one of the ones that fell to the .22 mag

Shot placement,shot placement,shot placement!Oh,did I mention shot placement? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

A .30-30 is a very nice gun for hog hunting. If tower shooting you need something that will shoot accurately and retain enough energy at 200 yards. I've used .50, .54 and .58 muzzleloaders, 243 (a nice choice), .25-06, .30-06, .308, .45 Long Colt and 1 oz. Shotgun slugs.... they all worked very well.
