I have some holiday cash left to spend on myself and I'm thinking of getting a new scope to put on the 204 and was wondering if any of you know a good place on-line to purchase a leupold scope from.
I think you'll find on a NIB Leupold, that the dealers are all going to be very close in price (probably due to MAP), or close enough to MAP to not make much difference strictly in terms of dollars spent.
That really only leaves a couple of areas to make one dealer excel over others. The most important IMO is customer service. Furnishing you with accurate info regarding the product you're interested in (product knowledge), quickly furnishing you with accurate up to date tracking info upon shipment (without you having to request it), and "are you pleased" with your order follow up after receipt of the item by you from the dealer are important things to me.
Secondly, does the dealer carry adequate stock on hand, most importantly the item you're interested in. Or is he going to have to order it from a distributor, having it shipped to his shop, then on to you? Or sometimes having it drop shipped to you from another location, or the factory? If you've got plenty of time to receive your order, this may not be a deal breaker for you. However the fewer hands your order has to pass thru will generally benefit you in the long run.
I recently ordered a NIB Leupold from a dealer whose name would be familiar with most on this site. BTW, I found the least expensive prices to be exactly the same from many dealers, or within such a small amount of dollars to not make a substantial difference. I found the service to be somewhat lacking in most areas from this dealer, with part of the order shipped incorrectly. While anyone can make a mistake, I found the overall level of service to be lacking, (even if I didn't count the part of the order that was shipped incorrectly) and I doubt very much whether I would order from them again.
I personally am willing to pay a little bit more (and usually do)to try and get that little bit of extra service that separates an excellent dealer from one that is average. As always, YMMV.
Hangtime.
