Best powder for the 223

Varget works well on heavier bullets, slow velocities on light bullets.

H335, H322, 748, Benchmark. Highest velocity with extreme accuracy is with N133 with the 50's and N135 with the 55's.

On yotes, I shoot the 50g Sierra at 3600 and the 55g Sierra(N133) at 3500(N135). The 55g Sierra lead tip blitz at 3500 shoots a coffee can size hole in a yote, no nippers, runners, or spinners.
 
I use Varget in my 223, 22-250 and .243. After playing around with various loads, all shoot very well. Also had good luck with IMR 4895 and 3031 in 223.

You should inform Speer of that, because they list different loads and velocities for those 2 powders.
 
I use H322 with very good results out of a Savage Predator. I have tried a little Varget but it has not shot as well for me yet as the H322. I also have a some Benchmark that I got for the .223 but the H322 shoots so good that I don't really want to mess with it.

This is 3 rounds @ 95 yards with 55 Gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, loaded to 2.332 (using hornady bullet comparator, that's about ten thou into the lands) and being pushed by 25 grains of Varget. This load runs just about 2950 fps through my Savage 12-FV. I'm sure I could get faster velocity with a different powder, but I'm sticking with what works.

Just curious, have you ever tried H322 in that same setup ?
You'll never do better than what you've got, just wondering if you experimented much to get that results.
 
Thanks Drifter . . . I'm not taking much credit for the group, I have the Savage mounted on a Choate Stock with a Harris Bipod under it, 26 power bushnell (nothing fancy, but you can sure see the target up close with it) on top . . . pretty sure any trigger man could shoot it well enough.

No, I've never run any H322, but I bet it would work. I think a lot of powders would work if a fella is willing to spend the time working up the loads. The COL of the loads I'm currently running are almost too long for the magazine in my Savage, so I can only put one round in the mag and one in the pipe.
 
Well that sounds like a good setup ! Don't sell yourself short dogslayer, anyone who can shoot a group like that knows how to shoot.
I do agree to some point though, some guns just plain shoot!
Thats why I asked if you tried other powders like the 322.

It does make it nice using a higher powered scope to get them little eye pleasers down range.

When I bought my Remington Model 7 Predator 223, I experimented with several powders, trying to find the most accurate and fast load. H335 gave good results, but I had some surplus WC846 powder that gave the best. I load 27.5 grains, using a 50 grain V-Max bullet. It is accurate and it chronographs around 3400 FPS very consistantly. This load has been deadly on coyotes, and I will use it until the powder supply runs out.
