Best Predator Gun?

GA Hunter

New member
I was just looking at guns today and wondered what the best gun for predator hunting is. I was looking at .204, .223, .22-250 and wondered if there were anymore I may have missed. Any suggestions on what the best one is?

any and all of them will work. some just hit harder and shoot longer than others. i have a 22-250 that i really love! but i think if i bought a predator rifle right now, it would be a .204 since i really dont need a ton of range and it wont tear fox and bobcats up so bad.
the .223 is probally a universal round, becuase it kills easily, hardly any fur damage and cheap ammo. and shoots accurate
the .22-250 will hit harder and shoot striaghter and futher but that means more fur damage. it will eat up a fox or bobcat. little higher ammo
the .204 will not give quite the distance, but it will kill w/ no fur damage. it shoots striaght and is pretty good against the wind. very accurate. higher ammo but not sure how much higher
other rounds include: 220 swift, 17 remington and fireball, .243, and others.
all of them will kill predators easily and effectivly, but some just do different things

Probably mostly coyotes but maybe a bobcat or fox if they walk out and are in season. If I could save the pelts that would be nice. If I wanna just kill them I have a .270 that I'm sure would do the job

Oh and I live in Georgia so I won't be making to many if any really long distance shots. There might be a couple but again not very many. So I don't know if that would make a difference or not

Oops that was my bad I forgot to check the laws. Sorry

If you can kill them with one gun why not another, and I thought n.y. was screwed up.But anyway, imo the .204 is a long shooter,300yds to me is long. But it can do some serious damage to a pelt, esp fox.Depends on the load..223 is a great choice, but again not fox fur friendly. You might want to look at a .17. that will be my next.It will kill big yotes and not shred fox.Good lck

I bought a olympic arms K16 from buds gun shop for 640.00 and it is awesome. Ar15 with 16" bull barrel shooting 3/4" 5 shot groups @100yds with hornady vmax ammo. I can put a 20oz pop bottle out at 300 and hit it all day long. .204 it a great gun but availability of factory ammo in my area is nonexistant. EVERYONE carries several brands of .223 ammo around here so that is why I chose .223. I have just started handloading so I am hoping to get even better results now.

For what you are wanting to do and your range of shots that you described I don't think you need a 24" bull barreled rifle. Check out the K16 or similar rifles.

You could add the 17 Fireball, 221 Fireball, 222 Rem., and probably the 22 Hornet to your list. It doesn't seem that you would need the power of the 22-250 for your application. With fox in the mix it would seem the 17 FB, 204, hornet, or the 221 would be a good choice.
