Best predator hunting state

tawnoper, you're right about the Reservation ( Tohono O'Dham Nation, AKA the Popago ). It was Del Western and Benny Murray of the AVCA who in 24 days of calling took 264 critters and spotted a total of 495. Another two man team from CVCA took 45 coyotes in less then 1 1/2 days of hunting the same area.

If anyone has any ideas of going there and trying it DON'T....You'll get in trouble for sure. The Popagos don't look to highly on non-Indians hunting there land nowadays. Plus the area is full of the Indian Police, INS and Border patrol.

guess, it snowed there last year, I seen it right here in PM lol. By the way, I'm talking about a foot of that stuff.

guess, outside of some of the places I talked about that you can't hunt anymore, I'd have to say Texas is probably the best place for predator hunting in the USA. But only if you know the right people ( ranchers ) or you have some extra bucks.

If an out-of-stater goes to Texas predator calling and don't know anyone, he or she is in bad shape I'd think. Your opinion?

Nope , it never snows in Texas. It was a high of 27 degrees when I shot this one in the Panhandle last Nov. in a snow storm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Texas has to be by far the best from the Panhandle to South
Texas to West Texas. We have it all !!!!

NW NM between Cayton and Tucumcari is by far the best I've seen. My shooting partner an I took 24 in a 10hr competition a few years ago and we didn't come close to winning. Mostly private land in that part of NM and no one really hunts them except as targets of opportunity.

I don't think even an out of stater would have trouble getting permission to hunt (try the local feed store) if he presented himself right and nothing else was in season.

nmleon, thanks. The best spot I have found in New Mexico was between falling rock and the cattle crossing sign lol.

24 in 10 hrs is 2.4 coyotes an hour, that's not bad. If you ever get down my way, stop in and check out the predator hunting museum.

You may find it interesting, with some old 70s and 80s pictures of competition hunts in Nevada, Arizona, California, New Mexico and even Old Mexico. I'm getting some old pics of some 60s hunts also.

I have over 80 hand calls on display and some of the old e-callers from years ago, 45s, 8 tracks etc and a bunch of other things.

What did it take to win?

If memory serves the winners got 36. There was some grumbling as to how maybe they cheated but I think that was just sour grapes. The two teens (brothers) that won have a well deserved reputation as being really good hunters and marksmen but are also rumored as being less than ethical and poaching a lot.

All this was done during the day? I know on a pvt ranch in NM you can hunt at night. Are they hunting from a truck? Legal if you are off the road in NM for nongame animals ( coyotes ) Or are they walking out making stands?

nmleon, when winning teams come back with alot of animals they are almost always called cheaters. This is not always true either, I have competed with guys that come back with big numbers and I know for a fact they don't cheat. It's all about location, you can't kill em if they ain't there.

This is interesting to me, one of the guys in our predator hunting club ( New Mexico Predator Callers Asso. ) was the Worlds champion in 2003, he's from Tularose. I'm sure he'd be interested in knowing more, me too for that matter I may come out of retirement and start competing again lol....Good Hunting

All during the day and most from a stand during the contest(at least us). I don't think they cheated either, just that they have a reputation for being somewhat less than honest. The competition was just local guys in an informal winner takes the pot kind of thing.

Try up NM39 or US54 north of Logan in the sand hills (MC Carty ranch area) or a mile or so north of Logan on NM39 make a left where the 1/4 size billboard says "Steve Trigg Ranch 32mi thataway

I bet those ranchers are going to be real happy, about the first week in October, when 500 coyote hunters start knocking on their door!

LOL, I suspect strangers could get permission from at least some of them (but probably only when nothing is in season) and I'd suggest phoning first as 30 or 40 miles of gravel road to find no one home would get old. Some of the gates do have phone numbers but cell signals are real spotty.

Ask at the feed or hardware stores for numbers. Everybody pretty much knows everybody else, if you took away the I-25 and I-40 corridors I doubt there'd be 2 or 3000 people left in Quay, San Miguel, and Harding counties combined, an area of some 8000sq mi. There's only 40,000 even counting the interstate corridors (which isn't where I'm talking about).

nmleon, I was not looking for a detailed map of where to hunt lol, but thanks. Most people don't understand how that many coyotes can be in one area, but they can. I've seen it myself up close and in person many times in southern Arizona, Mexico and Nevada, 20 to 30+ animals on a weekend were not that uncommon.

Living in the part of NM I live in has very little coyote population for reasons I don't need to get into. We need to get together sometime, I can show you some of my old competition tricks of yesterday lol.

nmleon, if you're ever in or around Carrizozo, stop in to check out the predator hunting museum at the Rainbow Inn motel. I have over 80 hand calls on display old and new. Some of the first e-callers ever made 45 record players, 8 track players, cassetts, old club jackets, old trophies, pictures....all kinds of things from the past...Good Hunting
