Best rifle rest

I just bought a new Savage 12 FVSS in .22-250. I was looking into a good solid rifle rest for target practice.

I saw a guy at the range the other day using a Lead Sled. Does anyone have any experience with these? If not the Lead Sled what other type of rest do you prefer?

How much you want to spend they range from free, to over $1000. I like the Hart rest with a Hoehn top on it. With a Bald Eagle, or Edgewood rear bag.

I think that using good rests, front and rear, improves shooting skills.
I also have a Hart front rest with a Hoehn windage adjustable top on it. In addition, I have a Bald Eagle adjustable front rest. I use a Cordura Bald Eagle rear rest.
Learning the shooting regimen with this good equipment is easier than with sand bags.

I bought a caldwell varmiter rest years ago not to expensive and well built works equally as well on the bench as in the feild. Nice rst for the money if your a tight wad like me

I have had this caldwell for a couple of years and for the money it has been a good rest for $125 you can buy a better rest but you will pay more for them too

I have had a lot of rests and use this one now, as stated probably not the best but it works as good as the best. One of my main reasons for getting it is the optional carry case. Taking a rest to the range and/or storing it can be a pain, with the case this is #1 in my book.

Lead sleds work okay for high recoil rifles but not very good for best groups.

+1

If you put some padding under the rubber feet on the bench (a doubled over towel, shirt, etc.,) you won't get a bounce on recoil that harms groups.

I've shot some pretty astounding groups over the years off the bench using the Harris (with the feet on a dampener of some sort) and a good rear bag (which can just be a sand bag).

If you get too accustomed to shooting off a high dollar front rest, you'll perhaps be at a disadvantage in the field when time comes to go prone, and shoot off the bi-pod with a small rear bag, or a rolled up coat... or your fist underneath the stock.

The Harris with a decent rear bag will shoot TONS better than you think it will from the bench. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

There were shot from the bench, off a bi-pod as described.

I tell ya a good one that don't cost alot. Its the Delta Rest made by Hornady.Just fill it with sand and I use a rear sand bag.The thing thats pretty cool about the Hornady too is to adjust height you just move it over to next notch or you can turn over.Kinda hard to explain but you can view one at the Hornady site.
