best rifle scope for $300

One of your better buys, if you can find one used (maybe in a pawn or used firearm shop) would be a Sightron SII or SIII...

My reason for the suggestion is that they have an excellent, no bull, warranty, regardless of owner (you don't have to be the original purchaser)..

I have a SII 4-16x and it's one of my favorites....

Redfield Revolution is under $300 and made by Leupold in the USA, Leupold VX-1, Vortex Diamondback is $200, Bushnell Legend, among others.

Spend between $2-300 and you'll have a dandy scope. Keep in mind that there is more to a scope than meets the eye (the optics), there is also the internal mechanics of the scope, which have to tough and reliable.

Amazon seems to have some decent deals
On scopes too. I have been looking for a higher power scope for my .243 as well since its hard to really see the potential of my reloads with my cheapo bushnell 3x9 But it still gets the job done. I found the Burris ff2 for under 300 on amazon along with some vortex and Nikons

IMO a fixed power scope is great for targets or longer range shooting but for hunting and fast action shots it's not ideal. I was deer hunting a few years ago and forgot to turn my scope back down from 18x and as we were walking along a canyon 5 bucks came running by. Not all o them were legal and they were about 40 yards away. All I saw in the scope was hair. Couldn't tell which one i was looking
At and it took me a minute to find them

My choice would be either a bushnell elite, nikon buckmaster, or even the nikon prostaff isnt a bad budget scope either.

In that price range, I think you would like a Burris Fullfield II, 4.5 x 14 x 42, with the ballistic plex reticle. Clear as can be and built right.

LOL, never was a $300 scope, basically sold for around $210 or so. But, Natchez Shooters Supply has discounted the Weaver 40/44 3-8-11x44 aspherical lens scope to around $120 or so, depending on reticle. Nice scope, made in Philippines. You should find its optics very good and adjustments are decent. Have one myself and if I needed/wanted such a power range scope, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

I'm confused by your post... In the scenario you described in your post the fact that you had a variable scope that you failed to dial the power back cost you a shot on a nice hunt... In my observation if you had a fixed power scope you wouldn't have been in that situation. A fixed power scope in the 6x range is an excellent choice...I agree with xsheadspace: SWFA makes an excellent optic, nice glass and very sturdy dependable scope for the price point expressed. I agree if the poster chose a fixed power In the 10, 20 etc he would be in the same situation that you were in... The SWFA SS in 6x deserves a look and I would have no problem putting it up against the scopes mentioned in this post...Alot of the "dangerous game" hunters use a fixed 4x... For the quick follow ups and situations you described...

I've had good luck with the Nikon Buckmasters and Prostaffs so far. Right in the price range you need with the power range you ask for. I have them on a hard kicking combo gun and a muzzleloader and don't have any issues with them. I have 3 of the Buckmaster 4x-12x-50SF's and a 3x-9x-50 Prostaff and all work great. Bought my buddy a 3x-9x-40 Prostaff and his works great as well. Can't speak to warranty and customer service on them, have never had to use either

Speaking of Nikon Buckmasters, forgot to mention Natchez Shooters Supply has discounted the price of a number of them. I gather these particular ones have been discontinued. They seem to be around $100 less than what Optics Planet and some other scope seller I checked.

A fixed 6x would be fine I was referring
To the higher fixed power scopes as the OP inquired about 4x12 scope. And yes I forgot
To dial back down to 6 from 18. I normally don't run that high a powered scope
For deer but its all I had to work With at the time.

Got ya!!! I think we've all been there on that one!!! It cost a friend of mines daughter a deer a few seasons ago.. She had the scope dialed up looking around and then it came time to take a deer out and nothing but hair!!!
