Best Scope under $500

I would half to go with a Barska, not many people have heard of them and i have one. I was skeptical at first but For 200 bones i gave it a try, its a awsome scope. Much like my Leopold mark four only a grand less in price. The barska comes in like three different models, one a 6x24x44 and a 10x40x50 and not sure one the third, all the scopes have finger adjustable target knobs and side paralax adjustment and come with a five inch sun shade and flip open scope caps. Good clarity and quality for that cheap of a scope, just like a leo mark four, which i used in iraq while serving in a infantry unit as the platoon sniper. Finger adjustable target knobs and mil dots are the ONLY way to go in my book, exspecially after sniper school lol.

go to sportsmansguide.com and you'll see the barska scopes.

PM me. I have something to say to you! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

Please, tell us more about Sniper school, pa pa please.

If you're using it for calling the Bushnell 4 x 16 will serve you much better. I have the older 4 x 16 without the new side focus for over two years and it's been a great scope. I got it used from Cliff Haydel.

Hopefully this doesn't sound too much like a stupid question, and Ill admit, Ive never hunted with a 6x24 scope, but for hunting purposes why would the 4x16 be better. Can't I just turn the 6x24 down to say 12 to 14 power and essentially accomplish the same thing?

You could adjust the power to any magnification you want. The lower powers are easier for guys with limited experience to get on target (as in not using a high power scope every day), There are those that can hit a running jack rabbit on 20 power, not everyone can do that. The 4-16 in my opinion is great for a calling rifle.

Because looking at your Avatar it looks like your into calling. The 4 X 16 on lower power is going to give you a lot better target aquisition. 6 X 24 would be a great pdog scope but wouldn't be my first choice calling.

YIKES.....!

The lenses on your Mark IV must really be dirty....

And thank the Good Lord that our government doesn't send troops off to war with a Barska scope.... After about 15 minutes under combat conditions, most Barska scopes would be looking at places the attached gun barrel is not pointing at..

Welcome Billy Goat.

Please tell more about your experience as a platoon sniper in Iraq. I am interested to hear it.

LR.

Oh yeah, My vote for under 5 bills would be for a 4x12 VXII Leupold, but to each their own!

I had a 6-24x scope for a lot of years. Great scope if you are shooting long distances (>200yrds) on static targets. I switched to a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x and I found I was getting a lot more running kills. I find the 9x lacks for my longer distance bunny shooting, so I've purchased a 4.5-14x Nikon Buckmaster that will still work for calling and longer distance shots. The 4.5-14x is $289 at Cabelas and comes in standard reticle, BDC and MIL-Dot. I wasn't overly impressed with the Nikon BDC and have decided to buy a standard reticle.

I have two of the Nikon buckmaster 4.5 to 14 scopes with the mil-dot and am starting to like them. I believe they may be the best value on the market. As far as the reticle is concerned it is a matter of preference, there are good and bad points to all of them. We can agonize over when this or that might be handy but it may never be needed just pick one and get used to it and you will be fine. I should qualify my opinion by stating that I have a zeiss and several leupolds and there is nothing wrong with any of them.

SuperSeal,

If you you are going to bust him out for being a phony, you have to dangle the carrot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Hence the asking for more stories of "back in the unit". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I don't check in and...............

Sir you are obviously mistaken real snipers use Leapers Scopes........

At least that's what I used back in the Starship Troopers... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My vote would be for the Bushnell 4200. I have three of them -- one 2.5-10 X50mm and two 4 - 16AOs. I love them. Clear and true.

Are you guys questioning his service to OUR country? I am pretty [beeep] sure most snipers aren't gear freaks like the rest of us. Hell, most probably can't afford a Mark 4, yet they put their [beeep] on the line for you!

I swear, if I heard some of these comments face to face, there would be some broken jaws.

True Barska probably isn't the best scope to reccomend?
But there's no way I'm gunna call the fella a "---- idiot" , he's intitled to his opinion, not name calling

Infact he's probably one of the last guys you want to piss off- if you catch my drift

So cut the new guy some slack.

Back to subject, I think I will try out a 4-16x40 Bushnell 4200 I have an upcoming Elk hunt I've just heard too much good not to.

Interesting comments....especially the last one... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You're probably right in that most snipers maybe can't afford a Mark 4. But I would venture to guess that 99.9% of them are smart enough to know they wouldn't want to go to war with a Barska scope attached to their sniper rifle either.

I'm not questioning his service... but I will question the intelligence of his comment. Anyone who claims that a Barska is as clear as a Leupold MK4 has either A: Hit the lottery with getting the best scope Barska ever put out. Or B: is trying to blow smoke up my [beeep].

And you are incorrect in your assumption that most snipers aren't gear nuts, infact most are because of the fact that they put there [beeep] on the line for us. I think that if there was any validity to his statement, he would have spoken up for himself by now.
