Best sound for badger?

Yesterday was my first "real" day of calling in quite a while. I saw several cottontails on the walk into the first stand, which is pretty unusual for most places here. So I thought to myself - "Self, you should play cottontail on this stand." So, I did. About five minutes into the stand I see movement at my 3 o'clock, about 70 yards out. With the naked eye, the critter looked odd, short-legged and fat. I got excited, thinking "Badger!" Of course, it was too far for the shotgun in hand, so I laid that down and moved to the rifle. I got him in the scope in just enough time to confirm that it was a badger's butt leaving. I'm not entirely sure he was responding to the call, but now that I know he's in the area (I made a walk about after the stand and noticed plenty of sign), I really really really want to try to get him in. Any tips on sounds or other tactics specifically for badgers?

I called in a badger with my Haydel hand call several years back. It is modified to sound like a high pitched jack. He came right in and posed for a 20 yard chest shot.

I have never specifically targeted badgers but have had them come in while calling... The last one I shot came in while playing ranting red bird... I have had them come in to rabbit.. I got one mounted a while back that came in to baby cottontail;

They are neat looking creatures... Stink like all get out..

Yep, that's why I want him to come all the way in! A mount or at least a rug is in his future. Maybe I need to whisper that I'll make him famous...

I want a ringtail cat to get mounted.. I don't think there are any in my area, but they are neat looking critters..

The sound of water rushing down the hole got my first badger.
The sound of six victor traps snapping around his hole got the second.
Tweety brought in another.
Lil Dog green brought in this one.
Bottom line is they have been quirky for me to call.

Ditto on that one too. There are a few around here, but they're pretty much nocturnal, and night hunting on public land in NM is an iffy proposition, so I've never actually targeted them.

Well I'll trade you the Badgers for the ringtails. I've killed many ringtails and have a large one mounted. We have only killed one badger on our lease, and my buddy stumbled across him in really thick heavy brush by our gut pile. He was building a new hole and was angry we interrupted him. So since we were only about 20 yds from him, buddy shot him with his Marlin 45-70. Ouch.

Good luck on getting him.

I've never targeted them, but every once in awhile a badger comes in to plain old jackrabbit. I usually won't shoot them anymore, hate skinning them. There is one in the front of all the coyotes in this picture from last month, my partner shot it. The badger came running in right to the caller, jackrabbit distress.

The one in this picture (my partner shot it too...) was pretty cool. We saw it coming from a half mile out. Looked like a little hover craft covered with a rug. But it ran full speed for a half mile to the jackrabbit distress too.

Forgot to mention it is illegal to shoot badgers in WA, they can only be trapped with a trapping card/license as a fur-bearer.
Many people shoot them, leaving it lay and then claim ignorance but it is in writing in the game pamphlet.
I have a trapping card and have skinned them.
Now it is fun to confuse them for a closeup snap shot.

I see them ocassionally but never had one to respond to my calls. Three times on stands while calling I could see one from where I was sitting and intentionally tried to get them to respond. Each time they never paid much attention although the first one was almost run over by an incoming coyote which added some fun to the situation and spooked both .... the coyote did not survive

I tried bird and small rodent sound but did not use louder jackrabbit since they were pretty close.

I have walked up on one going to a stand at night in shin deep grass which will grab your attention. He growled at me but made a beeline for its hole and never came back up to see what all the distressed sounds were about.
I did lip squeak this up this past week .

Never had called one before. Sorry for the blurred picture but my photographer was nervous that it was going to be next.
