Best twist rate for 55 grain V-Max???

Just my opinion, but in a .223, I've found the 1/9 is a really versatile rate for 40-70gr bullets...Other calibers may differ..I have a 1/12 that will handle up to 60gr with real accuracy..

I'm stuck between buying either a 1:8 heavy barrel or 1:9 bull barrel. I would prefer the 1:9 but it might be too heavy...

In a 16" barrel, the weight difference between a "heavy" contour and a "bull" contour will only be a few ounces...

You might want to go to AR15barrels.com and on the first web page, he has the a link to the dimensions of the various barrel grinds/contours...

Depending on your intended use, you may decide you don't want either of the above...I use mine for action competition matches where I'm shooting strings of 30-40 rounds in a matter of seconds and want a lower probability of heat distortion...

For hunting and general plinking, I could get by with a light-medium contour...That's why I bought the "Cheap Upper" and the Plum Crazy lower a couple of weeks ago....I want a light weight "plinker", without a lot of money involved...

All three of my carbines have a 1/9 barrel twist..

I'm sure you know every barrel is a little different.

I prefer a 1/7 since I like to be able to run the heavy stuff when needed. Each 1/7 I have does very well with 55s.

A 1/8 is always a good choice.

I only have one 1/9 left and it is great with 55s.

Have fun

I have a rock river arms coyote with 20" heavy barrel. I have loaded 55 v-maxes with H335 and gotten very nice groups. it is a 1:9.
just my experience. Can't judge which is "better".

For only 55gr bullets I would suggest 1:9 twist

If you will hunt with a heavier bullet in the future, 1:8 twist.

I don't like 1:7 twist barrels, but they have their purpose and generally speaking, they don't stabilize the lighter bullets effectively. With that said, I know a few of you on here get great accuracy with yours, so it barrel will be a little different.

I make all my barrels/uppers in 1:8 twist.

Well right now my only reasoning for buying an AR is just to say I have one and coyote hunting so I don't know why I would need any heavier of a bullet. What other animal could I hunt or what would I use the heavier bullet for? I have almost every other sort of caliber...just needed a smaller rifle caliber for varmints/predators.

You asked which twist rate for a 55 Vmax SO if that's the only bullet YOU planning shooting then listen to Scott and just go with a 1:9.

You can take any kind of animal! My buddy took a 2100 pound buffalo with a AR .223!

Here is a recent target set at 100 yards shot off my tripod using a WOA 16 inch barrel with a 1/7 twist. The bullets were Ultramax remans 55 grain balistic tips. This barrel will shoot 45-68 grain with excellent accuracy. David

That was a four shot group. I only use five round magazines in my rifle since I mostly hunt with it in Arizona. I just put four in the magazine that time and let them fly. This group was shot as quickly as I could get back on the target. The first three shots ever out of the this barrel when it was new had two in the same hole. David

Sorry fellas, no pictures.

Last night I shot my DPMS Sweet 16 1:9 twist .223 off the bipod on a bench @ 200 yards with handloaded 55 grain Vmax bullets over Benchmark.

My 5 shot group measured 1.0800" (caliper) @ 200 yards.

I've run 60's through with similiar luck but these shoot a hair tighter.

Do you have a problem with the 16" bull barrel being overly loud or the muzzle flash at night?

Oh but it does when your working up a load!

roky0702 I also own a sweet 16 and with Rem UMC I would get a good size muzzle flash, Since I have started loading my own I have yet to see any flash. The noise isn't too bad, at the range or just plinking you wanna wear ear protection.
