Best varmint scope under $500

Basically I'm looking at optics for my new pet AR project.

99% of what this gun will be used for is shooting woodchucks from 100-400 yards away, most of that shooting in the 300ish yard distance. I may also carry the rifle occasionally for some yote hunting as well, but it will mostly be for paper and woodchucks. Because of the occasional yote hunt, I'd like to keep the scope with a maximum of 5x power on the bottom end (I carry the 870 Supermag if I think they are gonna be closer than 50 yards), and I'd like a top end magnification of around 14 at minimum......16ish would be even better.

Most important characteristics are as follows in order:

Quality of optics (clarity/brightness)
Tracking of reticle changes (will want to occasionally dial for correct yardage, tactical style turrets are a plus as well but not a must have)
Prefer a mildot reticle, or something similar (hate BDC)
Weight, if all else is equal a lighter scope would be nice since I may carry this thing on yote hunts occasionally into the big woods.

As of now, I'm looking at the 4.5-14 Buckmaster scope from Nikon, (SF and mildot), the 4-16x42 Monarch (SF and mildot), Leupold VXII 4-12x40AO (would likely save and get custom shop options for reticles, and M1 adjustment dials).

I'm open to other ideas, and am curious what you guys think I should also be looking at and why. This would be my first "nice" piece of glass, I've got a few other leupolds and misc other stuff, but nothing that cost this much. I'd like to get the right one the first time around........

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I second the Bushnell 3200 and 4200 lines. Tough to beat for the $$. Have 2 6X24 4200 tacticals and a couple in the 3200 line.

I'll second on the Sightron...Especially the 4-16x SII Mil Dot....

I have one on my .204 AR and it has great clarity and brightness...All controls are easy to operate and accurate..

Me too on the Bushnells. I have a 4-16X 4200 and a 6-24X 4200 and a 5-15X 3200 and have nothing but praise for them. Seriously, they way better in my book than anything you can buy from Leopold in the price range. I like my Leupolds, don't get me wrong, but if I was looking for another bright clear varmint scope I would look no further then a 3200 or 4200 Bushnell.

I would have to agree on the Elite's for the money. However, when you factor in the repeatable adjustments or target turrets, you will have to go twice that amount to get a scope that will work a square test. Have only seen 3 or 4 that will pass that test.

For the cost, HANDS down, Muller Optic scope!!

Here are the two I have and would recommend.

I has this model on my AR15 and love it.

I have this scope on my Thompson Center Fire .243 for shots over 150 yards. This scope blows all other name brand scopes for the money. Muller's customer service is by far the best!

Rick James, call them tomorrow. Ask for Rick, and he will be more than happy to answer all of your questions.

They are small little company here in Michigan, tell Rick that Don ( which is my name ) say hi and sent you to him.

No BULL [beeep] here, just a honest American trying to help others. You may not like there scopes but at least call them.

Thats just my 2 cents for now! :)
Hope this helps.

I just recently bought a brand new Bushnell Elite 6500 series, 2.5x16x42, for $535 shipped off of ebay! Oh did I mention it has got the mildot reticle! Very nice scope!

Right now Cabelas is selling all of last years VXIII's for $75.00 off ($100.00 off if you have a cabelas card). I just picked up a 4.4x14ao for $450.00.

I have the Buckmaster that you are looking at and I think it is a good scope. It is sitting on my heavy barreled 308 right now. Another scope that you might look at, and for some reason is rarely mentioned, is the Weaver Grand Slam series of scopes. I have 6-20x40 on my 22-250 for prairie dogs. It has nice glass and the tracking is spot on. I have the varmint reticle in mine which is a fine duplex with a dot in the middle. It works very well for varmints. These scopes can be had for under $400. Just another option.
