One point I have found about waterproof clothing is one guy may live where 9" of rain is possible per day and where I live 9" of rain or less per year.
So it is possible to sit on wet ground during a normal rain here and is equally used for protection in snow.
My physical activity level is lower than most.
The measuring standard for levels of waterproof is different amongst us and manufacturers.
Gearing up for the cold is as important here. Merino wool with silk liners are the ultimate for me too. Broad comfort range, no binding, no sweat & freeze cycles, no odor.
