best way to train a decoy dog

well guys i need help with the new puppy. i have no idea how to start to train her for a decoy dog. i have a shock coller that has the beep mode not just shock i would like to use this when in the field.. should i get her a yote hide to chew on so she is not scared of the fur in her mouth..just in case you know!! she is a real handfull right now, not to mention a loudmouth outside /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif is it normal for curs to chew on tree bark? i have never had a dog do this /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I don't have any experience with decoy dogs, but I do have a little experience with other hunting and working breeds. I wouldn't be concerned about the the bark chewing. It's a sign of intensity in your pup, which is a good thing. It's probably also a sign of boredom, which goes hand in hand with intensity. You might try to keep it a little more occupied. However, that can be a losing battle with an intense dog.

Intense dogs are a pain around the yard, but make up for it in the field. Don't try to bull through the deal..one of you two will lose. I'd just try to minimize the chewing opportunities (keep her away from cherry trees, they're posinous) and take a lot of long walks with her. Make her listen to you on the walks, though. No matter what you do relax...sounds like you've got one with potential.

I do not have any expierence with decoy dogs. I have trained labs for quail & pheasant hunting. My best success has been to start out with obedience training as early as possible. Obedience is essential. I started off by teaching the pup to sit while giving it a bath. Work on teaching the dog to retrieve an object, first at a short distance & gradually increase it. Use hand signals along with vocal commands. These vocal & visual commands are the foundation to training your dog & will take time. As your dog graduates then start your leash work. I found that a choke collar worked the best on sitting & healing. As the dog gets the basics down with the choke collar (this could take many weeks) then use the choke collar & shock collar (on a low setting) together on sitting & healing. After a while you can take off the choke collar & use the shock collar only. Once your dog understands all of the obedience commands then you will be able to train him how to be a good decoy dog. I would recommend purchasing a book on obedience training for dogs & get started now. I have mainly hit a few high spots!
 
My pup Hunter also loves to chew on tree bark does it all the time in the field he is 7 months old now and and is a lot different now than he was even a few months ago. I've been taking him with me calling since he was 3 months mainly to get him used to the sounds, at first he would go crazy and try to bite the calls out of my hand, but now he knows what they are and it dosent bother him at all. I have a shock collar with tone as well but for whatever reason it seems I only need it when I let him out at home, there he dosent listen as well as he does in the field where I can usually bring him back with a whistle. I would definitely recomend a hide for her to chew on, I shot my first yotes with Hunter a month ago and he chewed on and growled at the yotes after I shot them I brought one home and skinned it and we play with it every couple days he really gets excited when I bring it out and loves to bite and growl at it.The guy that I bought my dog from has been raising Mt curs for over 20 years and he said just take him with you he'll figure it out, which he has after he learned some basic obediece. I would be careful about getting her into yotes too early as I've heard an agressive coyote will ruin a young dog
 
i have heard that also(the young dog and aggressive yotes) especially this time of year! i want her to get used to the sounds as well. the guy i got my girl from has both the mom and pop and takes them coyote hunting so i know it is in her blood, she just kinda sems a little skittish as of now. i have only had her 2 weeks though so ill give it some time to develop.. i know a guy that skins them out this way so maybe hell have one i can get from him soon. thanks for the help guys!!!
 
Is your dog a Black Mouth Cur?

I am currently looking for one as an all round family dog and also for coon, squirrel etc.

Thanks. I have been to most of the sites...including that one. My problem is that I don't want to pay double the price for a dog by having to pay shipping and don't have the time to travel that far that would probably come close to the price for shipping anyway.

I found a guy in Pa that has a 10 month old reddish male that I am going to see some time this week. He has him started as a hog dog.

The dog is actually 9 months old. I picked him up Monday.

Just getting asquainted right now. He has a long way to go to make a dog.

whats the plans for this dog you got? are you going to continue with the hog training or go for a decoy dog? And now the most important WHERES THE PICS?????
 
As far as healing and sitting goes, a pinch collar worked the best for me. Put it right behind the ears and make sure it stays there. A slight tug on the leash with the pinch collar and they will do what you say. I used mine one time and that was all it took. You can get them at PetsMart or probably any store similar.
 
Been a long time since I visited this thread.

I was catching carp at a pond for fertilizer. I threw them into the bucket, and Tucker (my BMC) stole them as you can see.

He is treeing and timbering squirrels and I plan on getting him started on coon soon.

Later, I will try to ease him into a decoy dog. We don't have a lot of yotes and most are a drive to the mountains away.

Anyway, here is the pic.
