better caliber .308 or 7mm-08?

Ok, if you are buying factory ammo then 308. If you reload, get the 260. That way you can say that its your wife's gun, but really you just bought yourself an awesome 1000 yard rifle to play with.

I guess I'm selfish.

Although true, most people won't shoot a deer beyond a range that a slug gun or 30-30 couldn't handle ballistically.

A 308 will reliably take deer farther out than most people should be shooting at one. So will the 2 others mentioned. It's a non-issue AFAIC.

The 260 will not necessarily fly flatter than the 7-08. It just depends on what rifle barrel/twist rate/bullet. In a hunting rifle, it's a non-issue.......

Id take a 7-08 any day over either the 260 or 308.

Its tough to beat the 7mms for an all around rifle. Shoot heavier bullets then the 6.5's for creatures like elk, and there BCs are a lot better then 30 cal, comparing apples to apples. It takes a lot bigger 30 cal bullet to match the ballistics of a lighter 7mm bullet that can be pushed faster with a higher BC.

That is why 7mms are tough to beat IMO.

I don't see much practical performance difference between the 308 and the 7-08 with 140-150 gr bullets.

Up to 200 yards, hard to beat the old 308 if you want practical, and the 243 for comfortable. I think recoil sensitive people may shoot the 243 better than the larger cartridges.

Deer are not that hard to kill, listen to the guys using 223's on them.

I always shot 150 and 165gr bullets in my 308's. A friend of mine swears by the Sierra 125 gr Spt bullets in his 308. I don't know why a 308 shooting a 100-130 grain bullet wouldn't work as well as a 257 Roberts, 260, 6.5x55, 270, 7-08, 7x57 shooting the same weight bullet on deer?

However, just to be even more practical, the boring old proven 270 with a 130gr bullet is pretty awesome on deer. Reload inform and cartridges everywhere. Besides the 270's are the true 7mm's.

Well said. I've killed a pile of deer with the 7-08. Still my favorite deer cartridge, and I've killed a pile of deer with other cartridges also...........

Both pale in comparison to the 284 Win

Too bad it is nearly extinct.

Have you ever mathematically converted .277 and .284 to metric? Try it and see which one is closer to 7mm.

Just click here.

I used to be a big fan of the .308 bullet, but I sold my 300 Win Mag and bought a 7mm Rem Mag, and then a 280. I imagine a 7-08 will be next in line. I've got 2 .243's and love them both but they are set up as Varmint rifles right now...

Yea and 0.277 = 7.035 millimeter

I actually have a 7-08, B Stick from the other boards convinced me to build one, like many others I'd imagine.

Another thing to ponder is that up until the 270 Mag came out ALL 270 bullets were designed for 270 velocities. .224, .284, .308 and others can't make that claim.

Larry, like myself, has been shooting the 7-08 since before it caught on. It's a good one. I'll never be without a 7-08.......

My 7-08 is sittin' and dryin' right now. Just bedded the trigger guard/floorplate today. I loooove the smell of Devcon in the mornin'.

Some 120gr TSXs @ 3000fps await. I'm thinkin' deer won't like them much........
