Better of the cheaper rifles

i just picked up a stevens 22-250 the guys at the gun shop said it was by far the best deal on a centerfire rifle these days i would like to look at the marlin x7 in 243 does anyone know what those are running $

I have a stevens in 223 and will never part with it. Stock is flimsy, but i just keep the rest an inch back from the front swivel stud and it doesnt effect accuracy. If the marlin was the same price as the stevens in my area, would have been a tough choice.

Of the ones you listed, Stevens is the proven Savage design and accuracy with the most aftermarket access. I'd go that route and am looking at one right now. Otherwise I'm partial to WBY Vanguard synthetic for $100 more.

MARLIN has announced they will produce a 22/250 in the XS7...a member here has shot a pre-released version in 22/250...they'll probably unveil it at the Shot Show coming up...marlin really goofed in not chambering either 223 or 22/250 initially...they could hav sold a ton of'em...wal-mart lists XL7 & XS7's in their special order catalog.

I just got a Marlin 243 for xmas. Total price out the door with scope was around $340. Shoots and feels great. Have shot a Stevens and like the stock and trigger on my Marlin better. As far as price around here I think they are pretty close.

Stevens 200 .243 with a Boyds stock and a trigger job by me (just under 3 lbs by adjusting and a bit of polishing) $280 + $92 for the stock. A rifle basix trigger would be an extra $70 but I don't need it. I'm waiting on a Mueller Multi-Shot 2-7×32. Best of all it shoots where I point it. Not a bad rig for the $$ I really like the stock. I was sort of lucky. I bought the rifle "new" a few months ago it turned out it was 2006 so I could put the boyds stock on it.

No brainer...Id definately go the stevens route.

They are pretty good shooteres from the box and tons of aftermarket stuff to be had for them, (basically a savage.) Plus you can build off of them later and do the work yourself.

I bought a stevens 243 about 2 months ago for my coyote rifle for both calling and the truck. It was $320 at sportsmans warehouse. Only thing I did was lighten the factory trigger and found a decent load with some 55g nbt's that shoot .5"-.75" moa and its killed 6 dogs so far. THe stock is worthless, but what can ya expect. As long as it shoots, thats really all that matters in my eyes.

The idea is to shoot the barrel out in a couple years, then rebarrel to either a 26" 6BR or 243 AI w/1:8 twist to shoot 105-115's out to 1K. Figure for another $800 for the shilen drop in barrel, laminate stock, rifle basix trigger,EGW 20moa base/rings, I can have a semi custom rifle that I did the work to, and it will shoot very very good out to 1K.

From what I have read, stevens is the "ENTRY Rifle" but with that kind of accuracy, I don't think it should be called that.. Very good review, Haven't heard of failures as H&R or NEF, for the money its a steal.

Marlin XS7 Range Report

Here's my post on the XS7 in 7mm-08. I can't confirm reports of bad accuracy, but the above post was the first time on the range with no trigger adjustments.

I'm also the guy that got to shoot the prototype XS7 in .22-250 last year. Nice rifle with a laminated stock. I'm not sure if Marlin is going to offer the laminated stock yet, but I sure tried to get them to let me have the rifle I shot. The traditional short action calibers should be coming soon. I really think Marlin has done a good job on this rifle platform.

hate to steal your thread but I went howa 1500 ranchland combo which has the hogue overmold stock and nikosterling scope in the 22-250. I got in for just over $400 and this thing is awesome. I am a browning guy, but didn't want to lay out that kind of cash for a truck gun, so I took a chance on this thing, couldn't have more more supprised and more pleased!

This is exactly my scenario. I want a .223 because I have coyotes, fox and bobcats in my area.

Edit: Bill, Marlin will offer a Walnut, Laminated, black or camo composite stock. Sure wish it had a detachable magazine though.
