BIG Predator Live Trap Finally Built (Pictures)

Spent a day and put together a project I planned a long time ago. Tons of procrastination I guess. Dimensions are 4' long, 3&1/2' tall and 3' across with heavy welded metal so it can catch some big critters as well with no troubles. Set it today for the first time by the chicken pens just as a test and the triggering plate/locking mechanism works fine. Within 2 hours caught a local barncat wanting some scrap meat.

Going to move it out to the back of the property amongst the treelines hoping to catch something a little better /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. When I do that Im going to lay down a thin piece of plywood on the bottom of the cage and cover that with some hay or straw so its a little more "natural". I'm hoping the foxes and coyotes are hungry enough to wander in but if not, I guess I just made a monster raccoon/possum/skunk trap. Take care.

P.S. I DID let that cat go in case you were wondering.

You see that is the tricky part /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I shall report back on that tomorrow on how it worked out but we (myself and my dad) are planning on just sliding two pipes through the top so we can lift it on our shouldars and walk it out to the spot. The spot isn't too far from the chicken coops and it probably is only about 75lbs, but just awkward to carry. This trap isn't meant to leave the property...or be stolen if left out for a long period of time. I would like to see somebody try to steal this thing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

And about the pan. When the trap is "set" it is only about 2-3 inches above the ground level so it isn't very high at all. The reason it is so high in the picture is because when its stepped on, the bar which slams the door also brings the pan up to that level due to the triggering string attached to the bar. You can see the string attached in the first picture.

So what will you do when you catch something that big and can't kill it???? I would like to see it set free from a distance of course.

Cool loooking trap though

Another reason that bar is on the back side is to make it easier to release whatever is in the cage. Once the dog kennel locks on the front are released (the weight of the door still keeps it down and shut), the bar on the back simply needs to be pushed forward to open the gateway on the opposite side thus keeping you away from the entrance. Hope I answered your question elks.

I seen one where a guy used a piece of big galvanized culvert (like 8' or so). He had a bear problem in his back yard (which is national forest land). It worked pretty good too. Cool setup, let us know how it works out. never know what a fella is gonna find in there.

You don't have any neighbors that are poorly do you? As in financially? Might find a neighbor in there looking for scraps. LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ahahahahahahaha. I'm not sure about that one River Runner. I guess I will see in the morning! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Come on...that thing took a bit of time just getting it to the right location! Weighed mored than I thought /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. I have it concealed (the bottom of the cage and the plate) and set, so I guess we will see. Sorry about nothing to report yet. It will probably take some time. I will post immediately with pics if something does happen to wander in.

Wow, I think I would run in the opposite direction if I had that in my trap ahahahaha. Sorry River Runner, nothing yet. I guarantee you that you will know the day of, if I catch something.

If you like drop me your e mail address, I will send you a few pics of cages I manufacture, maybe the design will give you some ideas? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
