Bill Martz Video Review

I recently finished watching the new Bill Martz Coyote Tutorial.

It's faily commonly known that I don't care much for Bill Martz. With that being said, I'll try to be as fair as possible with this review.

There are some good things about the video. First, it has some good scenes with coyotes coming to the call. The scenery is very pretty where he is hunting.

Some of his information is on coyotes is sound. Taken with a grain of salt, I believe much of what he says about coyote behavior is basically true to some degree.

I had several problems with this video. First off, Bill is the narrator. This entire video is narrated. There is no actual sound from any of the scenes except the gunshots. The problem with him narrating is that he is very DULL. My wife was sitting at the computer playing a game as I watched this and after about five minutes, she turned around and said "This guy is boring!"

Secondly, there are a lot of segments where you need to read the content on the screen. There isn't anyone reading along with it. It's just a black screen with writing and the words scroll past so slowly that it's a pain to read.

Bill's attitude toward his camera man and towards his shooters and towards his viewers is very much negative. Sometimes he will compliment the shooter or the camera man but you can tell the tone is generally negative.

Bill states his opinions on coyotes as if they are facts. This is one part of the video where you have to take the things he says with more than a grain of salt. He made some statments that were, in my opinion, very incorrect and could lead to frustration on the part of a newbie caller.

A large part of the video was supposed to be the coyote vocalizations. During that segment, you see a black screen with white letters telling you what kind of a howl you are hearing in the background. I believe these sounds are open to a lot of opinion. For example, the screen will show a label that says Male territorial howl and then you hear a coyote howl. How in the world do we know that it's from a male or female based on the howl. Is it because the voice is lower? Bill states these things as facts and I can tell you from experience that I've killed female coyotes with lower voices than some of the males I've killed.

I was also disapointed in the hunting segments. Bill told us what sounds he used. What we didn't get was how the sounds were used. It would have been nice to hear how he was using the sounds he did in order to get the coyotes to respond.

In short, I didn't buy this video and I'm glad I didn't. I don't think it's worth the asking price. I'd hate to suggest it to a beginner because beginners tend to take these sorts of things as gospel and his information is nothing more than an opinion. I think some experienced coyote hunters might get a kick out of it though. Lots of stuff in there that makes you scratch your head.

Randy, I remember Mr Martz from the old shade tree days, he was an expert then and I guess he still is ( in his own mind ). Any forum he goes to he make things happen, you got to give him credit for that lol. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Nope, Bill did not shoot or film any of the coyotes. (apparently) He was supposedly the brains behind the caller. HA HA

I'll bet you don't hear any of the call sequences because some lowly dirtbag pirate will record them and use them on their "toy class" caller, and we can't have that can we.

As you can see Randy put this thread in this forum instead of where it really should be put. He thinks with my vast knowledge of the legal system, karate and firearms that I will protect him from .........{I won't mention names but his initials are BM.
Truth be known, I kinda like Bill, [Try typing that without laughing] We haven't had anyone of his caliber around for quite awhile. And like Danny says he wakes everyone up. And he reminds me of my first ex wife....Mrs. Right, Her first name was "Always."
So Randy, you can relax. I doubt Mr.Bill will be around and if he shows, I won't tell him where you are. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif No honest I won't /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Randy, If I understand you correctly, In the video when a coyote is called and shot you can't even hear what sound is being played on the w.t.?? That would seem like a silly move for a guy who is supposedly in the business of selling the worlds most expensive e-call.

If Tonlocus is correct about w.t's fear of having it's sounds pirated well its probably too late already. I'd bet that most anybody, if they wanted wt sounds bad enough could have them by next week, just by asking around on these predator boards.

Chile,

While I have no idea of knowing, I'd venture a guess that Bill has never called in and shot an animal. Like I said, I've been around these boards a long, long time and have seen a pile of posts from Bill. When people ask him about his hunting, I don't ever remember him answering.

Lonny,

I thought too that if he were trying to sell callers, he would have included some of his sequence in there so we could hear just how "real" it sounded and see how well it worked. For all I know in all of those scenes, he could have been using a Foxpro. In fact, in the video he shows how small a FoxPro is compared to even his speaker. We don't know for sure that he didn't have a foxpro hidden inside that speaker of his.

Randy

i am afraid one of his speakers would make a foxpro shatter.i have used several other callers and none of them have the volume or sound quality.

What I am about to type here is second hand information, but you can put your own take on it. I have a friend who ranches east of Williston about 30+ miles. He had a fellow from Rhame, ND come up to his place to help him do some haying (He raises alfalfa & sells it commercially.) Anyway, this fellow from Rhame has a WT caller and one day when it was too wet to hay, he went out with his WT and called in some coyotes. They supposedly called in and shot 6 coyotes that day. Two of the coyotes he shot were as old as the hills. Both the male and female were practically gummers--hardly any teeth left. These were probably 8+ year old coyotes. This fellow from Rhame and I think his son also, have supposedly won some regional or national calling contests. They swear up and down that they wouldn't be calling in all the coyotes they get if they didn't use the WT caller.

The son said that they have called in 60+ coyotes with the WT caller since the first part of June.

Like I said at the outset, I did not witness any of this calling, so I can't vouch whether it is fact or fiction. One thing I do know though, is that a lot of ADC fellows use the WT caller, so it must have something going for it.

I don't believe that there is an ecaller out there with more volume than a Wildlife Tech caller. The reason most ADC people use the Wildlife Tech ecaller is because they feel it is the best available.

Saying that you have to kill coyotes in order to know/understand coyote behavior or to produce a high quality ecaller is like saying that an OB/GYN Doctor cannot deliver a baby because he has never had one himself...?????
bcott

I don't believe the quality of the WT caller was ever in doubt. I've never heard anything bad about the caller other than it is (or was) very heavy.

With that being said, his video (the topic of this post) was sub par. I question Bill's knowledge of coyotes and hunting. What I don't question is is abrasive attitude toward others. That's a given fact.

Randy

Silverfox, I don't doubt those numbers at all. If they call every weekend that would be an average of only five per weekend. Tyler and I called in six on two stands Sunday morning and were home by 8:00 o'clock. We use handcalls exclusively and average about 300 coyotes called in per year.
A WT is undisputably the heavyweight champ among E-callers(no pun intended-maybe) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I know two ADC men that use them close to the truck. Nothing equals it's volume. One uses a foxpro for long hikes, the other goes with mouth calls. BM has an incredible sound library available to customers. However it is not a silver bullet. It has no magical properties. It cannot make an expert of Krusty Klimber overnite as Bill claimed on the Huntmasters BBS.
WT quality and effectiveness is a different subject from Randy's review.

Silverfox,
The WT caller is indeed a high quality product. The volume is probably the loudest available on today's market, and the sound library that Mr. Martz has available is outstanding.

Jay,

He did at one time had access to this forum. He broke the rules and was baned. So, Mr Martz lost his rights to defend himself in this forum /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif .

Now, as far as his caller goes, I'm sure it's great, and it should be for the price he ask. I just think it's a shame he has to act the way he does on theses boards. I understand he is different in person, and I sure hope so.
