i want to get my 338 coated with something that would be a little more rust resistant and durable. which do you guys like better, and what kind of durability are you getting?

I am redoing my 338 as a winter project. new stock, some kind of coating, probly aftermarket trigger, talley rings and maybe a new scope.

so as a side question, would you get a new Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 to replace the Weaver classic 4-16, or leave the weaver. The weaver is nice but since im redoing the rifle configuration i thought maybe a nicer scope would be in order too. what do y'all think? spend the money or no????? im indecisive so without a push i cant decide anything

I can't answer you question regarding the coatings, but I think the Zeiss scope you mentioned is THE BEST deal for a scope out there hands down. The glass in those scopes and the repeatability is unmatched at that price! I own a 4.5-14x44 conquest and will someday get a 3-9x40 too. What kind of .338 do you have?

I had a savage vlp cerakoted about 1 1/2 years ago and so far I am very happy with it. It is in sniper gray(almost black) and the durability has been great and there is absolutely no glare in the sun. The cerakote seems to scratch in the brush, but they go away when I wipe it down at home.

I have had several Conquest 3x9x40 scopes and they all worked great. I have the one with the rapid z600 reticle on my 25-06 now and I like it the best of all. In my opinion the extra cost for the Z60 is worth it. I have consistently rand steel plates out to 1k with this set up, not my first choice for targets but it is awesome for a hunting rifle.

Black Ice is Teflon. I have a bolt coated in Teflon and it glides very smoothly. However, I cannot comment on coating a whole gun in teflon or it's durability at this point.

As for Cerakote, I have multiple guns/parts/scopes coated in Cerakote and I think it is a very durable finish. Better than Duracoat.

Birdsongs Black T is another good coating. Last I knew, it only came in green or black. Walter Birdsong recently passed away, but I believe the company is still around.

I like Cerakote best, I believe. It is certainly the thinnest of the 4, but seems to lack nothing in durabilty. However, I like my Teflon coated bult very so far. I just haven't used it enough to comment on durability yet........
