Black Powder substitute for hunting

What would be the best powder to use in my .50 Lyman Deer Stalker fore elk hunting in the wet North West with the 295g lead Power Belt bullets? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Easy cleaning would be a big plus. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

sac relig!

LOL

ok, here is why I would KEEP with the real black.

If your powder gets wet, all you have to do is let it dry and it's still good. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

carry a small bottle of soapy water I mean a small bottle, say about 2-3 oz and a few doz cleaning patches. Easy enough to clean an wipe down, and will prevent rusting.
anyways.

to answer your queestion. 777 may be good, but look at the primer you're using to get it to light. It better be hot.

My views might not jive with others', but I think real Black is the way to go.

You have to clean them no matter what, so it's no big deal. Real Black has a significantly lower ignition temp so your less likely to have any hang/misfire issues.

I've shot most of the substitutes in the past but still find the real deal to work the best for me.

I ran the whole circle with ML's, started out with an inline just to be able to hunt an extry season, then went to a sidelock, then a sidelock and patched round ball's, then ditched the .22's and picked up a caplock .32 for squirrels, now it's a flintlock .32. It just never ends.

I apoligize for rambling, LOL. I like real Black Powder.

Triple Seven loose, 110 shoots really fine in my Omega with 250 Shockwaves.

I'm not a lazy pellet stuffer and I believe you should check out what yours like with a little range time.

Gotta be real black for me. How's that saying go......once you go black, you'll never go back? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had good luck with 777 with my Remington inline. Easy cleanup with just water and it packs a pretty good punch.

Your Lyman Deer Stalker is a side hammer, right?.
I have a Thompson that is a side hammer that killed a Sambar Deer (elk from India). Used it in Florida = wet.
Hope my memory is correct, this gun and accessories are elsewhere right now.
I like the Thompson Maxi-Ball, 370 gr. great penetration with 90 gr. of Black Powder, and best accuracy. I have never recovered a bullet from anything except the Sambar. CCI #11 magnum caps. I haven't tried it but have heard that the side hammers with caps do not reliably ignite BP substitutes.
After loading, I pushed a large dollop of Bore Butter down on top of the bullet for water proofing. Then tape or cover the muzzle with plastic and a rubber band.
I found in a muzzle loading shop some little covers that you slip over the cap to seal at the nipple. They look like small sections of polyurethane hose.
Never had a misfire, even in the rain. On the Sambar hunt of 3 days with getting on the island the morning before and leaving the day after ( 5 total ) was all wet. The clothes that got wet the first day were wet when I got home.
I only unloaded the gun on the first morning when I got the Sambar and the last day when the hunt was over. I cleaned with a pint stainless bowl ( which we also used to bath with ) heated on a backpack stove and small amount of soap. This gun still looks like new, no rust.

I go hi-tech and kinda lazy with muzzleloading. I shoot a Savage 10ML II with accutrigger with smokeless powder and it is unreal. The accuraccy is second to none, and there is no messy cleanup or fouling. 2350fps and over 3000ftlbs aren't obtainable by standard muzzleloaders. With the price of the high end TC's and other expensive blackpowder guns unless smokeless powder isn't legal in your state then no other gun makes sense. I got the most expensive 10ML-II but you can get them fo less than $400. Just my two sense!

Frank,

I've hunted here in the great Northwet for years with a sidelock ML and even a flintlock, I use Goex and never have a problem, the secret is making sure it's clean and dry before loading it, that means wiping the bore with a dry patch or two and snapping a couple caps to make sure there's no oil between the cap and the powder. I also store all my guns muzzle down to prevent oil from running down the bore and collecting in the breech. After loading, I tape the muzzle with duct tape and place a piece of rubber gasket material on top of the nipple and lower the hammer on it to seal that end. When I'm in the woods ready to hunt, I cap it and seal the cap on the nipple with snowseal. Never had a misfire and you always get one shot, so make it a good one!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Can't help you with the subs in the sidelock, I do use 777 in my inlines and it works well under the same conditions. The Lyman manual doesn't mention 777, but equivelent loads of Pyrodex is.

Note: Equivalent loads of Pyrodex RS, Select, or P are acceptable.
Pyrodex pellets are not recommended with Lyman side hammer guns
due to difficult ignition.
