Bleaching Yote Skull with Per40

The coyote skull is ready for bleaching. How long should it soak in the Peroxide 40 bath to bleach correctly without damage? Minutes, hours, days, etc....and with teeth in place or must they be removed and reinstalled? And at any time should I dilute the solution? Thank you.

Any teeth that came out during the cleaning can be glued in before the whitening process, with Superglue.

Mix the 40% peroxide with another Clairol product called "Basic White". Available at most beauty shops also.

Mix the two into a cream like solution, kind of like mustard. Brush it onto the skull and let it dry. If you hang it somewhere so the sun hits it is even better.

Once it's dry (depending on humidity, etc) which may take over night, rinse it off let it dry again, and then spray it with some sealer or paint it, etc.

You can get away with just the 40% peroxide, using it as a bath and soak the skull, but it will powder the bone if left in too long. I used to post that method and too many folks left them in too long and ruined the skull.
If you do it this way I would suggest soaking it for an hour, rinse it, check it, and repeat if you feel it need be.

40% peroxide is some wicked some, it will blind you if splashed in your eyes and it will also burn your skin. Wear gloves and goggles if you can.

Thanks for the post and info. The Per40 I have comes fron a salon and is known as CLEAR DEVELOPER 40 Volume, made of; ionized water, peroxide, & phos. acid. The assistant says it is exactly what the local taxidermist uses.

Sound correct so far? What % do you mix it with the 'basic white' product, 50/50 perhaps?

Thank you for your continue help.

You got the right stuff, Ken.
I can't answer the other question ratio to ratio.
I pour half of what I think it would take to cover the skull, into a glass bowl, and then add "Basic White" stirring it up until I have a mustard like cream.
Your going to be using a little less "Basic White" then you are peroxide.

It's really not that critical, as long as you mix it into a brush on paste, and wash it off after it drys. If it needs another coat, no big deal. Better safe then sorry. One coat has always done it for me, up to a Bear skull.

Let us know how it goes....and I'll be here if you have any problems.

Before I go...you did degrease the skull, right? If not let me suggest washing it very well, (glue the teeth in first) in some heavy dish soap or straight acetone, to degrease it before you bleach it. Straight acetone work the best, but whatever you have on hand, be sure it's degreased.
If you boiled your skull to get the meat off, that will take care of most of the grease left in the skull.
