blown barrel, is the action OK?

a Guy here took a spill out of a boat while moose hunting and the barrel of his Rem 700 7mag apparently got plugged, and when he shot at a Moose the barrel split at the obstruction. So this gentleman just cut the barrel off just behind the obstruction and keeps shooting it. So he was talking about the gun being horribly inaccurate. I told him that would be understandable since there is no crown at all now, and that i would not be shoot anything thru that barrel at all. So my question is, would the action be ok to rebarrel? I have never dealt with this kind of situation, and dont know if there is a stress issue in the action now or anything?

thereason is he might sell me the whole gun with leupold scope for extremely cheap, but i dont want to start a build only to find out i need a new action.

If the bolt functions smoothly and a 1 piece base lines up easily and neither show sign of slop or misalignment, then there's a good chance the action is fine. If he kept shooting it with the barrel sawed off, I'd say he would've know if there was something wrong in that 7mag by now. With a blowback, the bolt and shroud would be the first places to show failure other than the barrel I would think. Make him thing you're only after the stock and scope and taking the action to practice your krylon skills then drive the price down low enough that you can do exactly that and not lose money.

To make it shoot better yes probly, but i dont know if it would be safe to keep shooting a barrel that has been partially blown apart, i really dont know though.
 
Action should be fine. I would rebarrel it. Factory takeoff tubes are readily available for cheap if he doesn't want to go custom........
