Blueprint Rem 700

I just got a Remington 700 Milspec 5r in 308. Is it a waste of money to lap the lugs/blueprint the action? Thanks. Chris

Definitely shoot it first and see if you're happy with it. Blueprinting an action usually requires rebarreling it as well so you'd essentially be throwing away a new barrel if you blueprinted it right away.

Not if he was going to re-headspace the factory barrel but if that---

Putting a new (Bartlien, Kreiger, Hawk Hill, Brux, etc) barrel on without any action work would be better money spent.

IMO, truing the action and lapping the lugs will probably throw the head space off by a little. Fixing that will require head spacing the barrel again. If the barrel won't shoot, you just wasted good money. Personally, I wouldn't spend the money without replacing the barrel with an aftermarket barrel.

Where I was trying to go with it...

Even, doing nothing with the action & replacing with a better barrel will yield much better results.

I'm sure the 5R will shoot well. Truing the action and putting back on the factory barrel makes no sense. Shoot it as is then true/rebarrel in the future. Otherwise you should've just bought a Walmart ADL and not wasted all that money on a 5R.

Mil Spec, means sloppy chamber and long leade. I WOULD have a good gunsmith set back the chamber by cutting off two threads and use a reamer with only .090 freebore, lap the lugs, take a cut off the front of the receiver...call it done.

Truing the action, waste of time unless you are into shooting 1000 yd competition.

Many do not know it, but there is a HUGE difference in the chambers of a Walmart sps blued 308 and a Milspec 5 R!

According to one of my favorite and trusted gun smiths, when I approached him about blue printing the action on my Rem 700 SPS, he said it was a lot of money with little improvement without a new barrel..So I held off....My stock one shoots better than I do on an average day....

Always shoot first, and then react according to your needs.

I have a factory Sendero in 300WM. The barrel coppers like crazy, I could never get more than 20 shots before the groups went from .5 MOA to softball sized without thorough cleaning. I did a Tubbs treatment on it and it is better. So blueprinting would have been a waste if I intended to use the factory barrel.

So I'm shooting out the factory barrel, which is accurate, if annoying.

GIven the gun can shoot .5MOA or better even with a factory barrel, I will likely Remage rebarrel it without blueprinting. Why pay to fix a nonexistent problem?
